Hi Everyone,

I was lucky to win the Twisted Electrons Crazy8 sequencer in the charity auction. I have a little experience with step sequencing, however. Does anyone have advice for using hardware step sequencers generally? I would love to find a sample list of patterns for melodic ideas, including notes/scales, note lengths, pattern lengths, etc. that I can start to experiment from. Any ideas you may have would be appreciated.

Thanks!

congrats. me too!

with my other sequencers ive always just gone for it. tweaking and noodling. that's where the fun is for me than having it set up up front. also using changing tempo is fun ;) especially if you have two sequencers both moving in time against each other.

depends what you are sequencing too. ie is it just the notes or can you sequence all other parameters? a modular environment or is it a synth with fewer options?

we can pass ideas back n forth when they arrive 8)

Congrats to you, too! An exchange of ideas would certainly be welcome. I am looking forward to tweaking and getting hands on without turning on a computer. There is not a lot of info online about this device, however. For example, it does not appear that you can automatically constrain sequences to a certain scale - does that sound right to you?

Berlin School sequencing on mewtube might help:

thanks
tbh ive not read much about it yet, but all my other sequencers with digital brains do that, so im assuming its possible within the software.
this would lead me then to assume they would add it, or at the least be planning to with a firmware update.

ill have a look round next couple of days, do some reading before it arrives :)

Berlin School - of course! Thank you :).

@vurt - please do let me know what you find. If this sequencer can constrain to a scale, that would raise its value significantly in my book. Also, kindly let me know when you hear from Twisted Electrons (I haven't heard anything yet).

Thanks!

Nice - enjoy!

I just loaded up with Plaits and third party versions of Clouds and Elements. There's some fantastic sounds to be had in there.

i definitely want to add a clouds.
not really looked at plaits or elements. but mutable have a few nice bits, stages looks fun too :)

regarding scales, you are aware its a drum/beat sequencer. doesn't output pitch data in the normal sense, will for midi as its a drum per key.

Hi vurt - are you sure? I think maybe you are talking about the Crazy8 Beats, no?

possibly. it's the only one that showed up in a modular grid search.

I think that is the Crazy8 Beats - I believe that one can be converted for direct Eurorack use.

what an idiot!
me i mean, of course!

you are correct, i didn't even realise there where two different ones :hihi:

compared to my other sequencers, the need for pitch quantisation seems less apparent. they use sliders or knobs for pitch, so quantising for absolutes compared to the base tone of the oscillator could be a little more hit and miss.
as this uses a keyboard layout, scale knowledge should be enough (or get them written down)
does that make sense?

although, given the "crazy" function, i guess it could come in handy there to force notes to a scale?

the cv chords function sounds like it could be fun :D

Makes sense to me. Seems like I need to brush up on my scales :(.
