On windows I have read that some people have had success by running windows remote on an ipad or andriod tablet and using it as a second display with the VST on the screen. That way you can see the VST, and use the touchscreen to control it. I have not got windows remote to work on my andriod tablet.

I would also been keen to know if there is a spiritual successor to Lemur. It seems the Lemur site has vanished.

i just saw a review of JockeyOSC in SOS recently. Said that it was a good replacement for TouchOSC.

I still use TouchOSC a lot. Nice that it works on ancient versions of Android too so I could pick up a large but old tablet for next to nothing, works like a charm with Reaper and Ableton (via LiveControl)

TouchOSC is a pretty great option. only problem is it doesn't can't run it straight from USB.. so unless I got WIFI, I'm stuck with the Akai Midimix...
