Thought I'd spend some time finishing something up (or sort of finishing anyway).
StoneWash n Sparkle
Mix might sound a bit rough, as I've been doing it on headphones.
PS: what's an 80's track without a load blowin guitar solo huh? (done by a friend of mine at work)
PSS: Suggestions for improving the mix would be helpful.
Cheers.

Man, that track BELONGS on a corporate phone line waiting system. In fact, I'm sure I've already heard it there? Not sure what is has to do with the 80s though.

Ouch... that hurts...Manc Chris wrote:Man, that track BELONGS on a corporate phone line waiting system. In fact, I'm sure I've already heard it there? Not sure what is has to do with the 80s though.
I was actually surfing late-nite TV at work (Bravo and Showcase) and it seemed like all the cheesy soft-porn TV shows from the 80's contained some sort of musak with Rhodes suitcases, guitar arps, bell synths, pianos (and guitar solos). Just wanted to try something akin to that era.
Actually, line-hold music may be one of those untapped genres I can break into.

I hear 80s music all the time while on hold.
But I'm terrible at the genre/era naming game. Any possibility of a 21st century remix of this 80s classic? Just for grins?

I appreciate the humorous banter on the topics of genres/eras/untapped-avenues and such. But all humor aside for a moment, I have put a fair amount of time into this track (god knows why).
I was kinda hoping to get some outside perspective on the overall mix. I've re-upped an edited MP3 (fixed a couple of timing blunders). Hopefully this version sounds a little tighter.
Cheers.

Right then...
In the beginning it seems like the guitars could be panned a little more left and right, and lowered to balance volume with the first lead melody. ofcourse if you do that, you will have to lower your drums and bass as well. you could compress the two guitars down more if you have not done so all ready but then you will loose some dynamic, unless you use a massive long attack, high thresh, and slow release...
at about 2:21 the volume seems a little more balanced... so you're answer is definitely more compression is needed in the beginning. The distorted 80's lead is quite well played, but something is robbing it of its tone. I almost feel like the lead was compressed hard or not enough mids were used on the amp, or software amp, the lead needs no compression, a bit of chorus, delay and verb, and let it breath.
call me crazy, but it seems the bass is not decaying in this track... for some odd reason I would imagine a bass to decay a bit more before the sustain in a track like this...
I really like this guitar solo. very steve via 80s like. and the track is quite beautiful in general. it does have these few mix nicks, but thats about it.
Thanks you for such a nice listen. I listened to it very loud even at 4:30 am.
cheers

Just listened again, the second mix seems a bit more full and balanced than the first. But, then again, I kinda didn't mind the first mix. If I had any critique to make, it would be to put that guitar a bit more in my face.
btw I meant what I wrote earlier about this sounding like an 80s classic.
