A new lo-if track

I was very curious to listen to this because I'm about to do my very first lo-fi hip hop track (talk about going out of my comfort zone) and wanted to have something to compare it to. Not sure I would consider this lo-fi based on some of the stuff I've listened to. In fact, the fidelity on this is pretty good. What exactly about this makes it lo-fi?

My (rather feeble) understanding of modern day lo-fi* is that there are different strands of it. The more common hip-hop and R&B infused lo-fi and then there are variants such as “lush” lo-fi and “cinematic” lo-fi. I am sort of going for the latter ones and adding a bit of “twang” to it.

The main take away I am getting from listening to modern day lo-fi playlists on Spotify is that they are short pieces containing simplified musical themes, ideas and progressions that repeat sections and but more importantly, the pieces don’t really resolve or culminate musically.

For this piece I did things like applying mono, scratchy and mechanical noise to the electric piano theme in first section. I gave the open and closed hi-hats 100% swing to make them more inconsistent. I also applied that puremagik lo-fi pluigin thingy I got on the electric piano second time around.

I will tinker around my DAW and see if I can figure out how to make those drums more 16bit sounding.

• Coming from the 90s, the term “lo-fi” was mostly associated with the alternative music genre and applied to certain artists that made music that was, well "lo-fi", compared to the bigger bombastic sounds of the mainstream alternative artists. Cool, I didn't mind this, and was pleasantly surprised when the guitar came in, it happened at just the right time.
If I had to offer a critique, it'd be that I'd like a touch more variation, even if it's just something simple like the drums dropping out for a bit, then coming back in. But yeah, good stuff.

It seems (to me at least) that the term "lo-fi" is more attached to instrumental hip-hop. but i think with all these genres ,there are variants. i think if you were to go after the larger "quasi" mainstream lo-fi listeners, you need to sort of make really slowed down mellow old skule hip-hop type stuff with those old skule 80s sounds.

think these types of sounds, but totally slowed down to < 100 bpm and not meant to me danced to. you also need to add a little bit of that late 90s early 00s hip-hop atonal piano tinkering (of which I am actually not a big fan)

thanks. yeah, i agree. i need to play around with the drum sequences a bit. i will try to split up the low end and hight end midi parts and put them at different swing levels.
