Turn off step record from external keys?

Last night for the first time I wired an external keyboard into a poly step seq and successfully step recorded with the keys. However, it seems that step recording is on all the time and even an accidental key press will register it as a note in the sequencer. Is there a button or toggle I can use to briefly turn off step recording if I want to play keys or audition sounds?

There isn't a built-in one - it is a good idea though, so I'll consider it. In the meantime, you could always connect your MIDI input device to the sequencer via a [MIDI branch] module, and then only route MIDI messages to the sequencer when some control variable is set.
