Sniu, I'm glad to hear you're happy. Without a start button I can't imagine starting or switching easily from program to program and have several explorer windows open browsing files on my two screens. At times my entire taskbar is packed with tools running in the background.

You must be happy because you use a touchscreen, not mouse, correct?

so midi is working?

it's a pretty useless poll if not, that's the reason most people don't "touch" it.

Actually i use it exactly like i used Win7.
What exactly makes it harder to switch programs?
The only difference is that the start button is invisible(but you can still use it. its in the same place).

So there *is* a start menu like it was in Win7?

This and many others report the opposite?? http://www.lifehacker.com.au/2012/08/re ... windows-8/

This makes me think you havnt actually used Windows 8. I used the beta and final. There is no start menu of any kind.

There ISN't a start menu like in Windows 7, but last night I installed start8 (google for it) and now I have a Start button and a start menu, like I had in Windows 7. Apart this, the OS is very stable, much faster to boot, slightly lighter on the hardware, and everything that works works like a charm. The desktop is basically the same as it was in Windows 7, and the removing of Aero makes it also lighter, which means faster (although not so good looking).
The machine I am running it don't have an ASIO hardware, therefore, no ASIO nor MIDI, but as soons as manufacturers certify their drivers for Windows 8, everything (including audio and MIDI) will work as it was supposed to work.
Incidentaly, I have Sonar X1 instaleed and it wirks as it was supposed to work when using the virtual instruments (using the Windows audio driver).

That said, I see no urge to upgrade to Windows 8 from those that are in Windows 7, but those that are still on XP, maybe it's a good idea to take advantage of the special upgrade offer, get a serial key, and start trying it. You may even add a second hard drive and have a dual boot machine (that's what I did in the machine I have it).

Thanks for the screenshot. Personally, I couldn't work effectively like this with a start menu being full screen on the 2nd screen(?). Glad it works out for you. Do you use a mouse or touchscreen?

Yep, that would be my first installation after installing Win8 to make it work for me.

No touchscreen yet.
And at the moment i dont see a need for it. I only use desktop applications.
But when DAWs adapt I will at least try it out! (looks like FL studio and Cakewalk are working on adapting to touchscreens)

I am using Cubae 6.5. I read of a guy who did some tests with Windows 7 compared to Windows 8. Windows 7 performed much better with Cubase. Maybe when SP1 arrives things will get better. All the negative testing regarding DPC latency was in vain, because the DPC Latency Checker wasn't ready for Windows 8 yet and still isn't.

Time will tell...

If you are talking about the gearslutz thread, the guy said he made no effort to "tweak" W8. I've personally switched my laptop to W8, turned off indexing and real time detection and I get identical performance from Cubase. But, W8 runs much leaner the W7. So, I have a lot more RAM available. Over a GIG more.

The problem with disabling indexing is that searches suck a lot then.

Depends, I have an SSD drive on my laptop so it makes no difference :)

You can tweak it instead of turning it off so that it doesn't run constantly while you are running your DAW. The problem with the default settings is that everything you do gets scanned by the security system and the indexing system.

I don't care. Windows has always been for the amateur 'bedroom producers' who spend their day here on KVR wondering what plugin to buy to stop their music sounding like shit. Anyone who's serious about music is already running OS X.

But seriously... Windows 7 was awesome, Windows 8 looks set to be a bigger catastrophe that Vista! :)
