UKU Pattern editor problem

When I try to create a strum pattern in the pattern editor, the number of beats I have set on the main page doubles, and I can't get the pattern editor to loop.

For example, I try to make a one bar (4 beat) pattern, but there are four silent beats at the end of my pattern each time it plays. If I go back to the main page the length now says 8 beats. So I make a second page in the pattern editor and make an 8 beat pattern. Now there are two bars of silence at the end, and when I go back to the main page the length says 16 beats.

(Edit: I've worked out now that the problem doesn't occur if I set length in the pattern editor itself to 8, and leave length on the main page at 4 beats. But now I'm confused about what the frets in the pattern editor represent. They seem to be a 1/16th note- so how does length=8 relate to that?)
