Ok. I downloaded it for a quick try. Here are my opinions, good and bad.
Sound. This is the first SynthEdit VSTi I have loaded so I cannot compare the sound to other SynthEdit creations. A year ago I would have said the sound is very nice. Now on my system it has to compete with the likes of z3ta, ABSynth, Reaktor, Delta III, Pentagon I, etc… In comparison it seems a bit lifeless. Not bad, it just sits there a bit. This could be a good thing when you are looking for sounds to fill a mix without being overbearing. On the other side, the further I got into the patch bank the better I liked the sounds. I was surprised at what you were getting out of this little synth. You have a nice talent for programming patches.
Load – This is the bad news. It was pretty heavy on my system. Single notes took as much power as z3ta, and even more. Thumper had big spikes in CPU usage. Flutter killed my system. Granted, I am running Sonar II with DirectiXer but it is also a P4 with a gig of memory. It is like the P4 denorm problem magnified.
Documentation – The rtf format documents is a nice touch. Opens in anything, less worries about Word viruses. Nice.
Graphics and layout – Again, this is the first SynthEdit synth I have loaded so I don’t know if these are standard graphics or your own. Either way they are very nice. I especially like the knobs and am surprised you don’t see more of the pie chart type knobs on other synths.
I can only assume that as SynthEdit improves, so will Grunt. Don’t take anything I said the wrong way. It is a very good effort. More than I could have done by a long shot. I am guessing that most problems I mentioned are due more to SynthEdit being in beta than anything else.

rabid ... thx for the feedback ...
sound ... yeah ... i know what you mean ... GRunT originally began as a simple bassline synth but kind of got out of hand a bit and is now not really one thing nor the other ... thx for your comments on the patches ... these are really the first ones ive done [im usually more of a preset tweaker ] ...
docs ... glad you like the .rtf format ... better than just old plain .txt for me as it allows SOME level of visual interest ...
gui ... 100% pure eXpeRIMentFOUR-designed skin ... yup i like the old pie knobs too [damn sight easier to build than 3d ones as well ] ...
now ... cpu load ... yeah i know [it WAS much lower when GRunT was only a bass-synth .... but i got carried away ... ] ... only a bit less than z3ta+ here too ... as you say some is me some is synthedit ... the real problem is the lfo modules ... in synthedit at the moment you have to use a 'standard' oscilator as an lfo and this produces a whole lot of wasted processing as far as i can tell ... also the way ive built it [all the modulation and delay routing] is very cpu-intensive ... there are a few minor things i can try so maybe a new version later this week ... btw ... the flutter patch runs about 18-20% on my humble old amd850 in massiva but kills your monster p4
again ... thx for your feedback ... always welcome ...
... cheers rob

Rob, I wonder what this thingy will do to my P200 if it can kill a P4 with a single note!!!!

you might be ok tris ... seems to be a p4 problem [even though the synth DOES contain a denormal cleaner module] ...
anyway ... youve tried fontaminator ... thats way more expensive here than GRunT ...
i am working both on optimisation of GRunT as well as a less hungry pd oscilator little sister bassline synth ...

What are you doing posting on here Rob, you should be working. You teachers are worse than them firefighters, all bloody holidays and endless whingeing about pay rises. Hang em is what I say.
(sorry, the only paper they had left at the shop was the telegraph. It seems to have got to me somewhat)
Ahh yes vst thing, Nice but too much cpu for me to use really. Now when those 1.5 gig laptops finally arrive......

Maybe you did what I did and tried to download ExperiementFour. I spent five minutes trying to download a nonexistant synth before I realized that Grunt is what I was after.opiadream wrote:I dont quite get your page
where do you download the synths?

I'm starting to like GRunT. It is a bit heavy on my P4, but some great patches in there for a bass thingy (or at least I'm busy playing it low--might be good high, too)!
Still not too crazy about the GUI, but I don't actively hate it or anything.
