Daft question - patches, editing, overwriting, locking etc

Hi All,

When I make a new bank and start creating presets what makes a preset DONE.
I can make a preset, then open it in a project and tweak it. Have I tweaked the original preset, is this saved? And what if I tweak and prefer the new one, can I overwrite the original. How does it work. Sure this is a daft question but having programmed on hardware synths before I'm just confused!
