Downsides to non-Java runtime libraries?

Developing an extension in a different JVM language (Scala, Kotlin, etc.) requires bundling a runtime library whose size can be appreciable (~5MB for Scala 2.13, good things are not free). This doesn't worry me, but should it? Are there performance implications I should be thinking of?
