I usually master first. Only then does the composing and mixing start.

Looks like an interesting process of producing. I've never used to production pyramid, I find it very hard to separate the production from the mixing process when producing electronic music.

Overall, a great article! Just my way of thinking, which must be really smart 8)
composition, arrangement/instrumentation, production/sound design, mixing, and mastering
Well, I always put sound design before composition. It's pretty obvious for someone who is synth freak. I'm not quite a composer to compose whatever the hell just in void.

Then arrangement comes from a sum of sound properties and composition. Some motiffs are cool and dominate the track. Some synths are great leads, some offer interesting modulation, others only work as immediate passages or details.

But, overall, I've got fixed process which gets the tracks done. Just mastered one yesterday ;)

i start with sounddesign, playing, and arrangment... i make my sounds, 98% of times, myself (except drums; i use my own drumkit a lot, made of samples with a field recorder, but i use also drum kits from arturia spark and maschine or i have samples that work like drums... also home brewed). the sounds drive the composition...
then i gonna mix, again with a sounddesign approach.
win 7 pro; cubase 10 pro, live 10 suite (+push 2), reaper, arturia V collection 6, reason 10, maschine (mk3+jam), korg collection, komplete 11 ultimate, softube modular, VM and many more..

I haven’t finished it reading it yet, but I think that so far it’s a great article. Personally, I usually start from sound design, especially since I’m using sequencers, MSEG, and performers for some of this process.

Me too, I weave in and out of processes. Then again I'm not that great at music anymore. I dotted down this thing where you conceptualize the project, map it into subcomponents, then start mapping those. In order to build it at the end. But I rarely use it for music actually. So..
