stray thought, had a quick search.. not knowing how the fields of pickups interact, place two pickups on the string 90 degrees apart to provide an x-y cartesian image, signal in quadrature. signal processing possibilities, stereo imaging for sure. a whole new dimension to the image.
i'm embarassed to still own a guitar but i remember making one with a cassette head for a pickup. wonder how small you could make pickups and position them for multiple strings. but like those steinbergs? where you could move teh pickups, except on rails so you can position them in play like a whammy.
