^ I really like the 80s RAT but never got round to buying one, as I only played bass seriously then. These days all the different ones, none of which have the original chip, do my head in and I’m loathed to spent over a ton for a modded one.

However, JHS do good things so I’d be interested to see what they did. There’s a Kinnatone mod which is based on the white rat, and that’s stupid money.

Personally, I have a modded Biyang Mouse which does me. Cost me £35 (with extra resistors/caps) and gives me a big enough nostalgia hit to not look further.

The 90's Rat uses the same chip but it's one of those things where it feels a little too noisy and brittle. I tend to keep my Rat parked in the same settings (distortion between 11 to 1 o'clock, everything else at 1 o'clock) for that particular distortion sound I like out of it, but once I start deviating too far form that, I just don't love it. It will be very interesting in hearing the modded Rat because I totally think it can be improved upon, and I'll be curious if that ends up being true with the JHS mod.

^ Yeah, I found there was a very narrow sweet spot, but it sounded great.

The JHS uses a NE5534 (TI) chip. I’ve never minded, and actually liked, the noise from the LM308 so I’ll stick with it.

I’d be interested to know how the JHS sounds vs your original one. Hope you like it.

I still can't imagine touching a JHS pedal after his foulness with Devi and ROG. Yes, he apologised sort of but still...

I bought a used Electro Harmonix Tube Zipper yesterday.
I hadn't realized how huge it is.
12V, 2 tubes (one seems to be seated in a crooked way).
Nice fuzz, but the filter is less pronunciated than I expected.

It doesn't play nice with my b-stock Harley Benton / Joyo California Sound.
I had it connected to that pedal, and even with the Tube Zipper switched off it affects tone and volume.
I use a loop-switch thingie so I could prolly fix it by putting both in separate loops (if I had space left in those loops, that is).

I may end up simply removing the Harley Benton / Joyo California Sound from my chain of pedalboards, as I just paid for a used two notes cab M which may make it largely redundant.

If you have the input and drive cranked, there will be less headroom for the filter resonance to do it's thing. If you keep the input below 12 o'clock, and set the resonance between 10 o'clock and 2 (it will start to self-oscillate at 3 o'clock), with the frequency set pretty low, you should definitely hear the action of the filter as you turn up the sensitivity. The filter has a very interesting character and it behaves very strangely. With resonance set low (below 8 o'clock) it's almost like the filter frequency doesn't have any effect on the sound. But once the resonance kicks in, that filter will do some wild stuff, particularly in trill mode.

The Tube Zipper has fast become one of my favorite pedals. It has a ton of range and can do anything from normal tube drive and auto-wah, to complete FSU and self-oscillation. I just wish it had CV inputs. :-)

No prob man, I didn't take it the wrong way, not at all.
As a matter of fact I'm sure it's gonna save me lots of time, whenever I feel the need to blabber I can just paste that instead.

Thanks justin3am, it's a versatile pedal indeed, with lots of character. Brings back memories of the 1st amp I used, 35-ish years ago: an old amp that prolly needed a new tube. All this time in vst-land made me forget how noisy analog stuff can be.

I talked myself into getting a compressor pedal in another thread. I already use an Art Levellar with my bass but it’s not something you can put anywhere in the chain.

Anyone got/tried a Marshall ED-1 The Compressor? It seems a bargain at £35 and I have the Guv’nor Plus pedal, so know the quality and the flashy but impractical knobs. Reviews are above average to very good too.
