So looks like the next contest will be 'Zebrify the Amen Break'.
Anyone know where there's a good quality, legal dl for the original Amen Break (that's assuming that it is public domain now)?

Yeah, I don't know if there would be a legal issue with the Amen Break in particular these days.hakey wrote:Anyone know where there's a good quality, legal dl for the original Amen Break (that's assuming that it is public domain now)?
The closest to a decent quality Amen Break was found in a Music Radar dnb breaks collection. (no, not the second exemple from the website)

Besides the dnb version of the amen may be the most popular (if that was the goal of the theme "zebrify popular stuff"
Anyway.. I will go find and select decent Amen breaks from a collection I've found on the internet some time back. There was no legal status involved and the random quality of the loop collection indicates that also.

Freesound:

Has been 'cleaned' and compressed - not sure what cleaned means here, but it sounds okay.

Well of course! But that means either we get lucky on the internet or one of us has a Amen brother record in good condition and knows to sample it right.hakey wrote:Wouldn't a nicely recorded wav of the original 6 second break from the Amen Brothers be preferable?

Didn't say this because a Zebrify contest was far from favorite but now I like the idea.... so I'm just sayin'
I can sample popular NES tunes (Super Mario Bros., Mappy, Bugs Bunny Crazy Castle or loads of others or even old ATARI 2600 like Frogger.
That would be fun to play with
+this should be legal if the intention to go commercially isn't involved.

OK: I've been out of the scene for a while, and was about to post on an FR, when I noticed this! Here are my votes:
1. Heaven
2. Demons Breath Bass
3. Incorporeal
Call me spiritual Nice to see people participating!
Oh and hakey's idea is right on the money: I find the lack of direction on these "contests" absurd. I'm not sure what 5 is (imitating an audio file?), but I'd be into 4,1 and 6. Anything really with some scale with which to judge.

I'm afraid that you've got the wrong end of the stick there. Zebrify is a plugin in its own right - the effects version of Zebra. The idea is to make a Zebrify patch for a given audio file (which is probably going to be the Amen Break).Breeze wrote: I'm not sure what 5 is (imitating an audio file?)

Well, I think it's good to have a mixture of different styles of contest - some on the freestyle end of the spectrum (like the recent ACE ones), some with a tightly focused goal, some somewhere in between.Breeze wrote:I find the lack of direction on these "contests" absurd.
That said, in my experience, the more focused the goal, the lower the participation - people are put off, perhaps because it's too difficult, or just not to their taste.
Anyway, for the foreseeable the suggestion and decision making process is a democratic affair, which I think is a good thing. So, if you have a really good idea for a future contest, speak up!
