Polyphase filter: where can I use it

I have looked at the polyphase filter example code on Music-dsp.
It seems to me, that the cutoff frequency cannot be set, it just cuts from the quarter of the sample rate frequency.
Have somebody used it with different cutoff?
And when is it wise to use? For antialiasing before downsampling?

I made a polyphase filter using Synthedit, and a custom allpass filter. The results are great. For upsampling it's mouch better than FIR filtering.
