So DDMF has a plug-in called DirectionalEQ.

The way I read this works is that one passes a stereo signal through a filter. Both channels are filtered with the same settings.
But then after the filter, depending on the directional curve one simply mixes in more processed (L or R) channel and less processed (L or R) channel, depending on the value on the direction knob?
I don't think it can be so complicated that it'd adjust the gains of the filters based on the direction knob. Or that it would do some sort of "slicing" of audio in the stereo field. Rather I think it merely adjusts the amount of processed signal being sent to each channel.
Right?

No idea what DDMF does, but there's a bunch of other possible implementations. The most obvious one that comes to mind would be to rotate the stereo field (kinda like mid/side encoding, but use variable angle rather than the fixed 45 degrees) to bring the desired "direction" to the "middle" and then only filter that, afterwards rotate back.
