You should do it... all that knowledge stored up there in the Compie grey matter zone should be disseminated:)

Definitely in English. It's important that you use the right 'vokalen' as it becomes quite difficult to understand when Aa's become Au's etc. Not talking too fast might also help. I find Dan Worral is a great example of someone who gives great tut, as is Fab Dupont who scores high on my list with his humour and straight forward descriptions.

Tutorials when done right are a life saver... There are however so many bad ones that it can be quite daunting finding the good ones. I've learnt a lot (tips/points of view) from your involvement in this forum and I'm sure (if done correctly) you could create quite a large fan base of eager learners who MIGHT be willing (after a while) to donate some cash.

Just give it a go...

Thanks for the feedback on this.

What's your opinion on subtitles (tendency currently is towards both english language, and "either way is fine, but subtitles!") and downloadable content (more higher quality video)?

Else...
I think I need to practice my vocalized English a bit more, then get started in Q2/2014. :tu:

It's the weekend, and I'd like to push this one up again.

I've got some valuable information so far, I even started first video and audio tests for DLC parallel to a Youtube upload. However, I still need some feedback on that end (especially from portable device users). The thread can be found here:
http://www.kvraudio.com/forum/viewtopic ... 5&t=401428

I'd also already collect some possible ideas for a series. Or better asked - what would you like to see?
Though please keep in mind, I'm no sound design or songwriting specialist, my expertise is mixing.

Or... do you have questions?

So yeah - please shoot away. Maybe even also those people, that were only reading so far. Please speak up, I won't bite. :P

UPDATE:

While the concept is pretty much set in stone, and I am currently working on ideas for an intro/outro and design of the visuals (logo, lower thirds, etc - thanks to the recent free HitFilm2 Express release), I contacted several sources regarding "legal concerns".

First and foremost, a lawer I know that helped me a couple of times already regarding copyright questions (this might take a while). And also the GEMA for using music for analysis.

Turns out the answer by the GEMA so far was highly discouraging.

Though granted, they confirmed me that Germany has no "fair use" clause (my lawer was mentioning UrhG §51 - Quotes of the German Copyright Law instead, which is also very strict), and they also recommended me to get in touch with the copyright holders directly. Ton of more work, but most of them are usually like "analysis? for teaching? Sure - go ahead!".

So this is a somewhat "positive" answer.
I only hate the online system by the GEMA to search for artists and music...

The negative answer however lies within the boundaries of offering DLC. And by DLC, they do mean "time limited downloads" (On-Demand) and Streaming only. Two things that are not possible to pull off for me, unless I create a closed-user-system with annual payments. And pay a load of money for a CP system, which can still be easily cracked and wouldn't work on the platforms I aim at.

And this is my main issue currently - unless someone here in Germany that has some experience with video's, GEMA audio content and download offerings (for free), that can get in touch with me through PM. To look for possible, fair priced solutions.

Either way... until I find a suitable "clearing and settlement system" for my videos, I have two possibilities:

1) go to Youtube, risk that most of videos are being "blocked", but I'm save from payments - since YouTube needs to handle that (On Demand Service) and not me - so I'd be off the hook in terms of handling fees

2) offer the videos as Download on my page, but pay according to a specific ratio.
That being:
2a) Documentaries (10 minutes long bar minimum), which has a technical view of things, being scientifically oriented - that's roughly 0,3cent per DLC
2b) Advisory/commentary (10 minutes long bar minimum), which is not a "technical view", but more like "commenting" on something - roughly 0,01cent
2c) everything that's shorter than 10 minutes counts as clip, and that's 0,005cent

Keep in mind:
The prices are "per download", not per streaming. Streaming wise it's at half as expensive, but the prices are still crazy. And that's only for one song, sans VAT!

Let's do the math:
Let us assume that I create a documentary with 5 songs in comparison, exceed 10 minutes of running time, and offer it as DLC. The finances would be like this:

Code: Select all

(5 songs * 0,03c) * 3000 downloads =
0,15c * 3000 downloads =
450 EUR

450 EUR * 19% VAT (Germany) = 535,50 EUR
And that is for one(!) MP4 file I offer for download, that happens to be downloaded 3000 times (with maybe half or even 1/3rd of them being download manager multi-access downloads for faster transfer).

Add to that, eventuall fees for licensing a song for analysis (which I haven't asked for yet)... Maybe even possible fees, should a lawer be like "no wait - we allowed you to use this file? Don't think so! Cease and Desist!"

Fees that I can't pay - neither beforehand nor post a specific time. Not to mention that I will get them back with through donations. Sponsoring is another issue, without completely "giving away" my concept or bugging the viewers for 30-60s with an advertisement. Not to mention that the prices for On-Demand with ads in it would be at least twice as high!

Remember, this is a low-budget to "free" tutorial release.
And the GEMA is actually recommending(!) to go to Youtube!

Result?
Currently - I'm major pissed because I want/have to play by the rules - yet I have to burn for others. Or better, I need to use a totally outdated and not really balanced system for the current media realm. Especially if I want to offer the videos as DLC, or even on BluRay at a later point (even higher fees, even if it's a download!).

Not only that, about 99% of releases in Germany (CD, on demand, etc) are handled through the GEMA - so I have to handle the fees no matter what. And I just rechecked the search functions on the GEMA page again - absolute horror in terms of finding things.

This puts this tutorial series high at risk - or better said, cuts away one IMO important branch of this series: song analysis/real examples. If not dropping this video series completely.

I thank you people so far for the positive comments and the interesting discussion. :tu:

But currently I feel like I'm major set back. Thanks to a certain "society" that only wants to do "good" for us musicians.

Compyfox wrote:So my question goes out to those that voted for a definite "no - I won't donate":
1. What (in your opinion) must to be done in order to financially support such a project.
2. What do you people expect from such a project?
3. What do you think must be taken care of in order to be successful?
Why does the project exist in the first place? I'm not just jumping in with that, I've read around 1/3 of the thread, I have no idea. It seems like you want to make some money, frankly, or attract industry to you as a representative to 'tutelage' per some products? I may be wrong, but I've read too much already. What are you teaching? Mixing the Compyfox way?

2. Who would have expectations at all?
3. You're on your own with that.

I go to a video tutorial behind a product I actually have, such as Brent Kallmer's Reaktor series, to learn things from his experience. He now has a subscription model where there is 'more content' and some of it is tangible beyond the tutes, I believe. But I don't need it to that extent. I don't need anything to that extent.

Or I'm interested quite specifically in what the product is and how it specifically is put together - a samples library - and the workflow. Of course a lot of the time I bolt, if the person takes the time in the vid to set things up or is too chatty.

I'm probably not a terrific gauge of this as a market but I don't think I'm way out in left field either, I am kind of taken aback at the notion of this project seen as directly remunerative.

Post

Good thinking right there.

Just short:
On the long run, I do want to earn money from that project. But not through the videos directly (in the beginning - it's not even possible without being a YT partner and the involved fees from my last post) - but actually through the created waves (interested in me as engineer) from that series, which can be picked up by my service(s).

Post

I would say Kallmer's thing serves as a good {general} model. He must do something for some particular products that work in Reaktor, as he pushes a few things (partnerships).

But he has a nice website and a presence he established, with a focus. So there are probably enough people addicted to 'Brent Kallmer figures out a lot of shit I never would' so that subscription is something he believes is going to be worth pushing. If I had money laying around I might go for it, as even though I may feature myself as clever, he has done the work before me and is absolutely more likely to figure shit out I didn't, and that I didn't know I could use before. That last emphasis is something.

So what I'm saying is as competitive as things are, laying down groundwork could take time. And while you believe in 'Compyfox' as a brand, establishing it via a particular line/workflow seems kind of de rigeur.

As far as the language, I don't think a German accent is going to throw me all that much, and if I'm going to read, I may as well not be watching, I'm reading. I don't really go for foreign flicks with subtitles.

Post

Well... subtitles are optional - read: softsubs. They won't be hardcoded.

I recently did tests with a couple of people who confirmed me, that softsubs on Macintosh do work. So that is pretty much set in stone.

Everything else...
Well, I don't want to create a video page that's all being like "oh, you want more? Sign up to my services and get access to hidden videos and the likes". That is going against my principles - and I downright hate pages/videos like that that are obviously reaching towards that direction.

My idea was to create an informative video series as add-on to my technical blog. Since I believe that pictures are worth thousand words - not only for easier understanding. It's a bonus project, with so far mixed to positive response.

Only that the legal stuff in Germany is a huge turn off.

Post

Well, Kallmer is way more subtle than that, and BlueWaterVST has been going for years with no mention of money. I don't know how he would have time for a different day job.

Post

Something I can't afford, unless I have a day-job which grants me like 1800EUR/month.

So I'm honest right from the start. And this thread was to gather further food for thought anyway
