Fripp played on several Bowie albums - and was pretty crucial to the sound in a number of cases – though maybe you could argue Adrian Belew was doing more on those productions where both were around.

Bowie did a full tour with NIN. There's a decent live album that shows how the two acts crossed over in the middle, with them covering each others' songs, rather than one acting just as support for the other.

Also, Bowie worked a fair amount with Iggy Pop (as celebrated on TEE by Kraftwerk) and Mick Ronson over long periods.

And Reeves Gabrels, though that didn't go so well artistically. They still managed two albums though.

I went to see them live before the first album came out (or maybe shortly afterwards). They were terrible and somehow managed to murder a cover of the Pixies' Debaser, which I didn't think was possible (until then).

with the heroes one, fripp was not told what to play, he just played. so that one is a true collaboration.

oh wait, on second thought, if others are credited on the songwriting credit then it's a true collaboration.

so yes, i guess maybe you are right. fripp got songwriting credits a lot with bowie? i have to double check that later. not sure about mick ronson.

i read that jimmy page produced all the led zep albums and he made sure to never use the same recording engineer twice.

i maybe wrongly thought that bowie operated similarly to jimmy page in that way, with people he worked with.

but with the bing crosby one, it's not a songwriting collaboration since they didn't write the song. but it still is a type of collaboration.

i'm wrong on that one too in terms of songwriting collaboration. i thought it's a bowie-reznor song. but really, it's a bowie-eno song.

I read that much later on, with the Beatles, Paul McCartney would go away for weeks and come back with a bunch of new songs and "tell" the other beatles how to play their parts as if they are just session players.

if my recall is correct, i may have seen on film, George Harrison being upset about being told how to play the guitar solo part for the song "let it be".
