I hadn't noticed this before but for some reason I'm seeing Kontakt showing variations in the L/R balance while playing when the reverb is off and there are no external FX - this happened using the factory Cello ensemble - it's a bit less in the solo cello but it's still there.
As I said i hadn't noticed this before but it became a problem in one of the sparser tracks.
Am I doing something wrong?

Most orchestral samples are stereo - I can't imagine why they wouldn't be for the cello.ChamomileShark wrote:I hadn't noticed this before but for some reason I'm seeing Kontakt showing variations in the L/R balance while playing when the reverb is off and there are no external FX - this happened using the factory Cello ensemble - it's a bit less in the solo cello but it's still there.

In a real orchestra the strings are not centered, chances are it kept the original panning.

it's not so much that it's panned or stereo - it's that it's constantly moving. I guess in an ensemble players might hit the bow with different force on different notes - but then why would the solo cello be moving about?

If it has a stereo widening effect on it, it might.
If the reverb is hitting quicker on one side than the other.
Just some thoughts. Maybe look 'under the hood' and have a peek.

heh, it really won't, she will be sitting in a chair the entire timeChamomileShark wrote:why would the solo cello be moving about?
usually
some scripted modulation assigned to CC10 under the hood?
factory library, very doubtful
by default CC10 is what will move the pan knob so unless you're tripping, that is coming there from your project somehow

Maybe it works like a piano? Where low notes are panned left and high notes are panned right? Try playing chromatically and see if it moves from left to right.
There's a setting in kontakt for that AFAIR. Or at least for their factory library.

I've tried a few instruments and most are like that. I did pick up that the VSL harp does seem to be chromatic - the others, like solo cello even with a single note show left / right volume variations while the note is sustained.
Maybe someone else could try it?
I wondered at some point if it was something in my set up but when I replaced kontakt with another instrument, for example a synth it the left/right volumes remain static.
I just tried one of the actual .wav files as I wondered if it was the scripting - it also moves - but it seems to be a regular movement - I can see it flicking up on say the right when it loops..

Oh, I'm assuming the pan knob is moving back and forth.
NEVERMIND
But it does not make any sense for there to be more than a tiny variance for a single cello. I can't really see a recording session for the section being that, well, ARRANGED. Are you just basically seeing meters showing stereo do ya think? It does do that! The meters in Kontakt show it. A single sus note. It should, it's a stereo recording.
The factory library VSL August Foerster grand piano takes up some stereo field, no doubt. Left to right according to the keyboard.

You said you're "seeing" variations in the L/R balance but do you actually significantly hear them also ?
I'm asking because in EWQL for example I can see moving L/R balance also (for the samples recorded with natural orchestral stereo reverb), but they're not actually moving in the stereo field.
I think what is seen is the natural reverb bouncing from different sides as someone has said earlier also.

I think that probably it is how it's supposed to be - I switched the reverb off although there maybe a natural reverb on the "dry" samples - you are right I can't hear them moving - this all started with an observation that one of my tracks appeared not to be centred by my publisher and after correcting the L/R bias I'd notice this apparent movement.
