I don’t think one can put Blackhole in the same category as most other reverbs

I would say, you could call it a "performer reverb", because it doesn't produce artifacts when you change certain parameters, like other reverbs do, plus it has that automation ribbon.

I don't think its age is any relevant. It still sounds better than 90% of reverbs coming out nowadays. Like the other Eventide reverbs. I got it for $49 too though, so, fair enough. Who knows when the next sale will come though.

Blackhole has a sound all its own.
It doesn't get lost in the mix and has some very cool automation capabilities.
Still very relevant.

I was pretty set on on getting it with the sale but at the end valhalla shimmer is as good, I remember from a previous trial it had a more unique and characterful some but now it doesn't seem so unique to me.

I don't get the constant comparison of Shimmer and Blackhole - they are both doing completely different things.

^This all the way. They're both good to have in one's audio arsenal.

... and, to completely strict the picture is not of a black hole - you can't take a picture of a black hole. the picture is of the radiation that is bend around the black hole as it appears to earth. the black hole itself is about 1/3 the diameter of the black space in the middle.
