I've always been a fan of Gary Numan and John Foxx and both make pretty heavy use of phasers. Reading about their gear during the 80s the MXR Phase 100 phaser and the EH Polyphase are often mentioned. I already have the Arts Acoustic Big Rock: http://www.artsacoustic.com/artsacoustic_bigrock.php which is a great phaser, but not the same sound.

Googling for a VST version of the MXR has only turned up mentions of a phaser in Amplitude 2 which was close.

So does anything else come close? I'm not looking for an exact replica, more just interested in how it might be different from other phasers I have (clip below give a good idea of the sound - best example of the sound is starting at about 4min 20sec):

I have SoundToys PhaseMistress, and it sounds great.

I also like D16 Fazortan, but between the two I'd go with PhaseMistress.

ime software phasers are more appreciable if you add some "line noise" to whatever you're processing, if it's a digital source.. the noise crest was part of what made analog phasers so nice imo.
you come and go, you come and go. amitabha neither a follower nor a leader be tagore "where roads are made i lose my way" where there is certainty, consideration is absent.

Since you can never have too many phasers, I like the Super Phazor included in this free vst :

None of those will be close. Not even the correct number of stages.

Just for fun, I glanced over the manual...and... It probably could - that is a whole lot of plugin, but they don't give enough info in the manual, but probably you best bet.

The MXR100 is a rather strange one, quite overkill for a guitar-pedal, it's a 10-stage phaser, but the odd thing is that only six stages are modulating, the other 4 are static, so the distribution of notches will change as it sweeps.

Cheers

Very good point, some actually add noise on purpose, some distort the signal so that there are more harmonics to play with.

Checkout the the free phasers on that free version of Acustica's Nebula its got a polyphase emulation

http://www.acustica-audio.com/index.php ... &Itemid=53

and if u buy Nebula(we all should)
you'll be able to get these
http://www.timpetherick.co.uk/downloads ... c-phasers/

With the commercial version of nebula you'll get,
the the best Dynamic-convolution-Like(technicaslly its vector wutever)
for EQs,Dynamics(comps limiters),Guitars amps,Distortion and Phasers and reverbs(best spring emu)

Although if u buy it, the Liscence copyright thinngy is very confusing
so read up on how you install and register

BTW nebula is not able to do Pitch shifting and Chorusing
The sound is terrible for those.
so find something else for that

Thanks for all the suggestions. Interesting that despite having been a signature phaser there are no real attempts at emulating it. It's also clear I'll have to learn more about the significance of phase stages!

And who would have guessed that the most expensive phaser is the one that might nail the sound :D
