For me it's mostly the marketing and online presence, bit over the top for my taste, but other than that, have no interest in their plugins, pretty much that goes for plenty of vendors out there, I'm not some golden ears mixing specialists who suffers from severe GAS or wannabe that thinks he will compensate with them for his lack of skills.
This entire forum is wading through predictions, opinions, barely formed thoughts, drama, and whining. If you don't enjoy that, why are you here? ShawnG

If you want some really top of the line character plugins have a look at House of Kush.
I recently bought Novatron and all I can say is Wow! They also have a sub model as well (if you're into that).
Their EQs and Pre-Amps are class too!

Is he a mod or how would he delete posts?skipscada wrote:This guy threw a hissy fit and deleted posts at gearslutz because Sound on Sound didn't give them the right kind of praise and dared to use their own perfectly reasonable criteria in their review of the Slate Digital Virtual Microphone System.
I agree to the point with his marketing scheme being over the top at times. Not a fan of this Jobs-style either, but to each his own. What´s more important to me: The plugs I´ve tried so far do live up to the hype. And he´s providing support on an open forum (for those who forget there´s an actual customer support, and those are many ).
How? Did Gibson buy Slate? And if I read it right on their page Cakewalk doesn´t even offer a subscription plan. Rent-to-own is a different thing.Googly Smythe wrote:Regarding subscriptions, I should think that what happened to Cakewalk would give most people cause for thought.

Steven Is very prone to use superlatives "Believe me people, this is by far the best emulation we have ever done, the best ever, better than the original. Believe me."
At that point he reminds me of someone ...
At that point he reminds me of someone ...

In my humble opinion Steven Slate is a big part of the problem. He comes across like a snake oil salesman trying to sell me a potion for life extension. And a part of the real estate at the end of the rainbow. At the same time.

Good plugins bad marketing... He comes across to me anyway as a cheap used car salesman.akeia wrote:In my humble opinion Steven Slate is a big part of the problem. I may have misunderstood a comment over there, so I'll delete that bit.c0nan wrote:Is he a mod or how would he delete posts?skipscada wrote:This guy threw a hissy fit and deleted posts at gearslutz because Sound on Sound didn't give them the right kind of praise and dared to use their own perfectly reasonable criteria in their review of the Slate Digital Virtual Microphone System.

Hate is a bit of a strong word. Steven is very active on social media - particularly in the "Slate Audiophiles" Facebook group - and to be honest I just found him a bit irritating. He would constantly push the subscription model in a salesman-like fashion, be unhelpful and dismissive to those with honest criticism of his products/business model and frequently get on the defensive when a rival plugin came along. While there's nothing wrong with his plugins, I just found they didn't really suit my music so I ditched the subscription.
He's obviously doing well for himself and fair play to him in a competitive market - but his brand is not for me.

This is so true. Every his plugin is an ABSOLUTE TOP OF THE TOP BAT SHIT MOON ENGRAVED best thing ever happening in plugin world.akeia wrote:In my humble opinion Steven Slate is a big part of the problem. And he is imo very disrespectful to other developers. You will never find UAD or someone elses pissing or dissecting his releases yet as soon as UAD or someone release a plugin which cover same hardware device as one in his potfolio you will see him INSTANTLY releasing videos and telling people and his userbase how his plugin is equally good as one from competition. He did that to Acustica and to UAD AFAIK. And AFAIK no other company ever did that. Quite low blow attitude IMO - not saying it is factual low blow deceptive prick no nothing like that just my IMO + that legendary "you need to calibrate batman crap" in order to test our plugin.
He choose his words VERY carefully in public so basically you can never pinpoint him but between the lines you see the details. For average rural John Doe it looks like his plugins are next batshit.
On top of that he earned "Late Digital" nickname on GS forum for abandoning his promises for products. He made promises on updates as old as 3-4 years for products which never happened. Look at GS.
So ok. I can't say his plugins sounds like shit they don't - they are above average plugins noone can say that but overall this company is snake oil + detergent vendetta + late promises so keep that in mind.
At the VERY same time you can support normal developers which are creating and pushing boundaries without screaming and selling their mother. Cytomic, DMG, NI, etc.etc.etc.

Slate plugins are expensive to buy, I dont do Subs and Ive now amassed a collection of plugins from developers who cover similar ground that Im happy to support (or have extremely cheap prices or given freebies) that make Slate redundant to me.
E.g. SKnote, Black Rooster, Plugin Alliance, Softube, Soundtoys, Melda, blah blah

From my experience Steves got an enthusiastic passion about what he does and presents. Not everyone's cuppa as I guess some people may find it overwhelming, bottom line, Im happy with everything Ive received from Slate.
Slate got Fabrice, so all good there. Overall I judge the products and company on what they do for the user and their music, after all that's the end game...and its all good.
Looking forward to 2018 new additions and updates.

Slate plugins threaten some long held beliefs that analog will always be better than digital.
Steven Slate believes in his products, and he is vocal and active on social media.
People are easily threatened.
Ultimately Slate products deliver the goods and are used by many top professionals in the industry.
I'd say Steven Slate and Slate Digital are kicking ass.
