It's the last sentence that leads me to believe Steinberg might finally come around to implementing this into Cubase and Nuendo. Competition is a great motivator for progress.

I hope Steinberg gets on board. I'm new to Cubase and my only two major wishlist items for Cubase are something like Studio One's Quick Link functionality for mapping controllers to plugins (sorry, the 8 parameter limitation of Quick Controls sucks) and the lack of ARA.
I look forward to the next Studio One update with ARA2 though.
