Looks promising !
Til this day I still use expensive mastering houses with analog chains, but with sooner or later plug ins like this will be able to replace them.
Never liked ozone or slate for mastering though.

Wanted to try it for a few min before commenting on it. If you want something quick, easy and all in one place this is a good fit. It takes about a minute to dial in a very usable sound. Love that they included the mono maker and the presence gives a nice "air". The Foundation knob starts to get out of hand real quick, but some people will probably love it. Like many things, less is more with this plugin.
I liked the metering for the most part, but would be cool if the full meter could show GR in addition to in and out. Nice to see how dynamic range is being emphasized.
Not sure it's for me, but I totally get what PA is trying to do and the vision behind it.

i am very sorry to put a damper on things, and i'm not even sure why it happened, but i put it on a track and i did NOT like how it sounded at all
maybe i wasn't using it properly? idk. i turned off my mastering chain (eq -> light parallel M/S compression -> multiband compression -> clipper -> interpeak limiter -> OD DeEdger) and put this on instead, and I TRIED adjusting the settings to get better results—I read the manual and tried to use it accordingly—but it seemed to crumple everything down and make it sound muddier.
maybe it's because it's because of the type of music i was putting into it? i used a dark ambient track, and this seems like it's probably geared towards pop, more. idk. to my ears, it removed all the sparkle and space from it.
sorry Brainworx, and sorry again everyone—i guess just definitely try it on all the different kinds of source material you tend to work on before buying it

The original two tracks I tried it on were pretty polished, so I maybe I didn't expect a whole lot. It sounded decent with the little bit I dialed in with the EQ. Trying again another source I'm not too impressed. The THD is either very subtle or I just don't hear what it's doing. I thought at first I heard some thickening effect, but now I'm 2nd guessing myself if it's just placebo of turning a knob or something else.sleepcircle wrote:i am very sorry to put a damper on things, and i'm not even sure why it happened, but i put it on a track and i did NOT like how it sounded at all
I get the idea behind it, but right now I'd get better results (ironically or not) with other PA tools.
EDIT: Demo'ing and listening more especially with the THD I was just having a hard time hearing, because I wasn't pushing much additional gain. The more gain you raise, then the more THD you'll hear which totally makes sense. I'm just used to gain staging over several stages/plugins vs. relying on one to raise several or more DB. The tracks I was initially trying didn't need but hardly any gain, so the little I was using wasn't having much if any effect. Same will apply for the compressor.
I would would be more interested in seeing if they do a 'pro' version with more controls and features.

This is not a CPU hog incredibly, it does give good results with very little effort. Is it better than my mastering chain now, probably not.You will still need to put a True Peak limiter after this

No they won't, the reason why you pay for professional mastering is to have another, highly qualified pair of years go over your track, not because they have fancy magic analog chains. Most mastering gear is designed to be transparent, it's fairly replaceable. Studios have these huge gearlists because they attract clients and because it's useful in specific situations but 95% of the work is surgical, characterless treatment that can be done easily with ITB plugins.christian f. wrote:Looks promising !

What's the deal with the Beta download? Is it nag-screened, time-limited, doesn't save settings etc (like a demo version)?

Looks fully featured for 14 days. I didn't try saving any presets, but there was no nag screens, audio bursts, etc. Just the usual PA activation process for the demo key.MogwaiBoy wrote:What's the deal with the Beta download? I toyed with it a bit over the weekend.
The EQ is pretty nice. It is pretty restricted in how far you can dial things, which I'm totally okay with, since if you need to make more than a 3db change to the midrange to shape things, it's probably better fixed in the mix.
It has some good features overall - the monomaker is handy, as is the de-esser. I've got a couple of great de-essers but it's nice to have one that just sort of does its thing and gets out of the way.
I also like that it generally favors compression over limiting. I'll still throw a TP limiter at the end, and maybe preface the whole chain with a good EQ to do any surgery I need to, but it seems to encapsulate a lot of menial tasks into a fire-and-forget interface.
Will it replace my complete mastering chain? God no. Sometimes I'm just gonna need to ride those levels manually, or I'll get a client who needs something really above-and-beyond, processing-wise.
But it seems like it'll be a decent tool to have in the drawer, provided the price is reasonable.

It's quite nice for plugin. i got good results with track that was ready for mastering (epic orchestral) and it does good good. But then later I got the same result with AA pink EQ and BB HG-2 I like compressor section the most

As a Plugin Alliance fan, I am interested in this product. If the price is reasonable with my $75 monthly and/or Heavy Hitter discount, I will more than likely purchase bx_masterdesk when released.
