Also Hornet's Tape vst I can't believe hasn't been mentioned as it's hands down one of the best especially considering the grouping function and auto gain.
Agreed on the Airwindows Tape plugins. I have tried almost all of them except for the new IK one and ToTape5 is the one that I find the most pleasing and useful. Very natural sounding and can add a nice solidity to the low end when needed and tucks things in.

I don't feel compelled to try more out as I know what I'm getting with ToTape5 now and feel like subtly using colour throughout the mix into ToTape5 gets a really good sound. I don't always use it but when it works it's great. Don't forget to try out FromTape as well from Airwindows. It's not got a headbump like ToTape5 and it uses a bit less CPU, it is like a very clean take on tape and equally useful, I find myself using it on single tracks more.

I use the Hornet Tape all the time. It was dirt cheap and it sounds gorgeous on my master. I try to remove it but everything just sounds better with it on. Now I have never used the reel thing (sorry) and I don't care if it's emulating it or not :P I also run True Iron before it. Juice... :hihi:
The inner workings of vurts mind are a force to be reckoned with.
music is a need in my life...yes I could survive without it but tbh I dont know how

If software then AirWindows else actual tape. ;)

I only got experience with Softube Tape and Toneboosters TrackEssentials 3/BusTools 3. I like Tape for what it is doing to harsh digital sounds on individual tracks. I like Reelbus 3 very much for gluing and polishing on the masterbus. Reelbus is really some kind of magic :)

With the Airwindows plugins I always find it kind of difficult to know which plugin is supposed to do what and in what way it's supposed to be used. I tried to watch some of the presentation videos by the Airwindows developer, but I had to quit, because the videos gave me instant ADHD and I can't stand this weird demo track that he always uses to showcase the plugins. No offense to the man, I'm sure he is some kind of creative genius, but his video presentations cognitively overwhelm me.

So FromTape, ToTape, IronOxide etcetera... which of these is supposed to do what? Do I need both FromTape and ToTape? Should I insert them on the first plugin slot or the last or just on the submix-busses or master? I just don't understand how they are intended (ideally) to be used and the fact that they have no GUI and no proper metering doesn't help. Can someone with more experience with Airwindows plugs clarify?

Those 3 are separate plugs meant to work independently. If you find that combinations work for you that's fine too. There's details on all of them at airwindows.com. I know, reading sucks.

Post

@jbarish I don't have any issue with reading. What I was asking for is user experience with the various Airwindows tape plugins which you a) don't seem to have or b) don't like to share.

Otherwise, I'm still curious: how do people use these Airwindows Tape Emus? One instance as first plugin (or last?) on every channel. Only on submix busses? Anyone with experience willing to share your best practice?

Currently trying to turn noise into music. Is boutique the new old?

"ToTape" and "FromTape" are sort of deceptively named. they aren't actually meant to work TOGETHER like a pair.

"ToTape" is the tape emulation, "FromTape" is a very stripped-down version of the same tape emulation. It softens the audio, but does not distort or flutter.

ToTape is supposed to be the high quality studio tape. IronOxide is supposed to be the garbagey, grungey cassette or consumer multitrack.

Where you put them in your signal path depends on where you would normally put them. You can either use them sometimes to fill out the sound a bit, or you can bounce all your tracks to them and then put a final instance on the master bus, just before limiting and clipping.

Thank you for all the opinions. I realised there's a pull-out panel in Tape with input/output levels which gives a lot more options. I'll try these Airwindows plugins too, they look intriguing :tu:

IMHO If you want it to sound like actual tape then IK Multimedia cannot be beat.

AudioThing Reels is good for lo-fi stuff, but i don't like any of the others.
Slate VTM for example, is shite. The waves stuff, all of them just can't really nail tape.
Their behaviour regarding transients for example, is just a bit goofy.

Softube Tape is TIGHT for ultra surgical computer sculpted sounds.
The others aren't. In my opinion and experience. The bass and top-end can be adjusted for a bit of TASTE, not just 'choose the best of whatever some code monkey could manage to bang out before he sold it to you'.
I'm not talking 'EDM' here, i mean the fine arts. Tight low end. Crispy highs that don't slice your ears off.

ruffle those feathers
And I have seen pro's use Slate vtm and waves too. Did they make it like shite or gold? The answer is obvious. You know it's better to be quiet than open your mouth and reveal your'e a fool. :hihi:

I appreciate this might be true, but it's just too expensive and the CPU usage is also a barrier. If it uses convolution then I suspect it is also latent, which is a serious deal breaker for me

I demoed them to see what the fuss is about but honestly prefer the sound of ToTape5. They sound cool but I didn't feel like they were leaps and bounds from ToTape5, in fact I preferred the airwindows offering on the songs I tried them on. The cpu hit was massive for me, I don't mind printing if it's worth it but yeah, these aren't for me.
