I'm planning to drive my DT 990 Pro off the Behringer UMC404HD interface as I have so far with the rest of my home studio. If it is good enough to record vocals and drive my monitors, it should be ok with the headphones (but I may need to plug it to the wall instead of running on USB power).

I'm fully aware that I'm leaving a percentage of definition on the table by not upgrading to a better interface. It is on the to-do list, just not in the budget yet. Plus I'm delaying that purchase because this seems to be an area of technology that is growing fast, with every generation becoming better and cheaper.

I use a Firestudio from Presonus (it's an old discontinued model). It has a little controller, and I run my headphones out of that, I can't find any info from Presonus saying what kind of headphones it's suited for.

I better stop reading this thread... I'm thinking of trying out Focal Clear now :(

I was pretty happy with my DT880 and DT1770.

It`s not a bug... it`s a feature!

I'm probably gonna get slayed or laughed at for this, but I've ran my HD650s (300ohm) straight out of my MacBook Pro's 3.5mm jack and been perfectly happy with the results. I do monitor fairly quietly though as I already have tinnitus from excessive headphone use.

I don't doubt that a dedicated headphone amp would improve things, but I imagine the law of diminishing returns firmly applies as the price goes up.

If your system can't supply the correct output power, the concern is not just that the headphones will sound quieter, but that they'll distort: your bass will sound diminished (which the 650 might enjoy since they are a touch bass-heavy) but also lose clarity. The treble may be misrepresented with spikes in the wrong places, etc.

Good to know you are happy with the reproduction straight out of the laptop port. Gives hopes for those of us on cost-friendly interfaces.
