Round 2:

Here is my revised mix. Thanks for the comments!

Filtered out more low end which was sucking the energy out of some of the tracks.
Made the snare and cymbals more pronounced.
Tightened up the kick further.
Added some subtle delay for more mid range width.
Added some volume automation to the pads.
Added some "glue" to the master buss.
Rolled off some harshness in the high frequencies.

All in all I am happy with how the mix turned out. Thanks for the great song, Loris.

It seems as if you forgot to comment on my mix in the second posting. Doesn't really matter though as I'm on holiday and won't have a chance to do any changes to my mix.

Post

I´m away from DAW and can´t make changes to my mix.

So to answer the questions. Yes I liked the mixes as they were and no changes need be made in my opinion. I had no preconceptions to what a perfect mix (no such thing right) should sound like, so when I heard some new styles I had to realize that each is a different flavor of the old thing. I did not think you had to change anything in your mix. If there is something you want to do that you think will make your mix better according to the style in which you were already building it, then do it! So like you said, if there is something you forgot to do, or if there is a change you can do to enhance the mood you were setting. Otherwise, i thing it will be hard to mess up the mix unless you change your direction completely. Sorry for the delay, was out of town at this crucial time. Ill be watching the thread every several hrs, so the questions will be answered promptly

Thank you for the reply Loris.
So I leave the first submission unchanged for the second round. No new submission from my side.

Good luck everyone!

Thanks for your answer Loris,
finally I changed a few things :
the bass got more high frequencies as it was too quiet on small systems, but still on very small systems it is quiet, but it is a sub after all ^^
I pushed the volume of the hip-hop like sfx sample that comes on some beats, as I found it add a big fullness to this passage.
I tamed a bit the highs of the intro pads, as it was a bit harsh I found.
I pushed all the instruments up O.5dB, to have the drums more glued.
I tried to enhance the acoustic kick, but it didn't came the way I wanted. So I ended up with something more organic...
I added a few stereo into the cymbals, as well as a tiny EQ to make them fuller.
Small stereo enhancement and warm added to the mix buss.
I centered the clap as I found it was a bit un-balanced, while keeping the stereo.

Evaluating. Will have the results sometime by the end of today! Dammit Im sorry Kolyev. I didnt realize I made that mistake. I will leave some final comments on ALL the songs once everything is said and done.

Post

Damn! These mixes are so good haha! They sound so bright and airy, I really love the changes. So obviously this comes down to personal preference. The changes have definitely altered my initial choices of top 3...

From most favorite:

1: Davias
2: Photonic
3: Nightpolymath

I have comments as I have promised but I do not have time for them tonight. I will edit and repost. But for now, briefly: this was a lot of fun and a really great learning experience, really awesome work everyone!!

Post

Woha woha woha... are all tracks in already?

Let me check:

Davias: 2nd mix available
Kolyev: was forgotten in the first evaluation (Mix Round 1), on holiday
NIghtpolymath: 2nd mix available
Photonic: no changes needed, Mix is the same for Mix Round 2
Piranha81: 2nd mix submission pending
Shroom: away from the DAW
Vasdim: 2nd mix available

Technically, Piranha81 still has a 39hours (over 1,5 days, German time zone) left to mix and submit. Please let us be fair and give him that time before the final results are posted.

Yeah, I'm here, sorry for making you all wait! :hail:
I enhanced the transients of the drums in every way possible, with compression adjustments, transient designers and less saturation.
I also smothed out the snare sound and tried to better balance various sounds and some of the effects.
