Hello and welcome to the KVR Mix Challenge 27 - November 2016

This is the introduction post, where we directly link to the challenge corresponding files (source files, submission information, sponsors), start of the evaluation process and the first post for re-submissions for Mix Round 2.

It's the Autumn (Fall) season, it's dark outside, it's spooky. Sadly a bit too late for Halloween. It's also not a #MetalNovember track.

But when do we ever get the chance to work on a "Folk Murder Ballad"? How about this month?!

In this Challenge, we get the chance to mix an awesome Folk (Murder) Ballab provided by slacker. His track is called "Come down to the Waters Edge" and it tells a haunting story that parents might have told their children in the Victorian Era of of South West England to keep them in line.

Also some news
-----------------
With this Challenge, we're now down to one (as in number: 1) track with the Mix Challenge Song Pool. I am in touch with a couple of people at this point, but as long as I don't have access to their files, or the integrity check was successful, that would mean "Game Over" by the end of December. Which would be a pity.

So please get involved, enjoy browsing the new webpage, leave us a message via Mail or our Social Media accounts. And if you want, share your feedback or ideas for page add-ons in the Gossip and Discussion thread. In fact, there are still open questions there.

Please take note of the following
Also Important:
  • We're desperately looking for new source material for future Mix Challenges. Our pool is in constant fear of running dry. Please follow our official campaign. No new tracks, no more challenges!
  • Please also spread the word on your preferred social media platform. Our Twitter Account is already a good start

This post will be updated with the corresponding links as we progress, and of course the suitable thread headlines. So please watch this spot:

A word from the song provider:
slacker wrote:It started life as my attempt to write an English folk murder ballad.

If you're not sure what I mean by a murder ballad, you could do worse than check out Bellowhead's "Greenwoodside" or for an Americanversion, the Violent Femmes "Country Death Song".

However, I'm not necessarily looking for a folk styled mix and I'd like to see where you can take things.

Two things I'm after specifically: I think the vocals need to be prominent as the lyrics are important. While the girl singing at the end is meant to be the ghost of the dead girl.

In terms of my preferences, I generally prefer a well balanced mix with some warmth to it.

I've a penchant for Toms at the moment so it would be good for those to cut through and I'd like a solid low end to the mix. I've not been averse to a bit of EDM in my time. I also think that it's quite a dark song, so I don't think the mix should be too twee.

I've tried to give you everything as clean as possible, which I hope helps. There are also some additional parts from the Rough Mix that you can use or ignore as you see fit.

Other than that, it's over to you.

I look forward to hearing what you do with it!

Thanks,

Slacker

A few words by the Mix Challenge staff:
Staff (Compyfox) wrote:Anyone remember that 90ies Levi's commercial with the in-your face rock track? Yeah, that was "Stiltskin" with "Inside", and this track clearly stabs at it sound wise. Mixed with some elements from one of Britain's most famous export "America" (if anyone of you can remember their Soundtrack to "The Last Unicorn"). This might give you a nice idea of where the sound could go.

Though personally I'd also port this more into the mid 70ies. Meaning, lots of character EQ, vintage consoles, tape machines, etc. Whatever compliments the track best in your opinion.

Please also consult the TXT files that are bundled in the source files package below. There you can find more information about the individual files and changes to the time signature.

Special Add-On Rules:
  • try to create a mix that complements this production (in your own style)
  • Clean / Alternative versions can be used if you need more flexibility over a certain sound (present in this production)
  • No rearrangement of the song structure, with the exception of the following add-on rules
  • ADD-ON RULE: none
  • try to not(!) pre-master the track (please no overuse of mix bus treatment)

Hi everyone,

I've never been very good at finishing tracks, let alone sharing them, so I'm interested in what you think of this track and looking forward to hearing what you can do with it...

Oh, and if I can get my act together, I'll be posting a link to some more music, in case you're interested.

If you have any questions, I'll be keeping an eye on this thread and will be happy to help.

Cheers,

Slacker

Good song. I am messing a bit with my plug-ins rig these days, I hope I will be able to mix it in time!

Thanks

Hi all,

Thank you Slacker for providing this song. It was realy fun to mix. I tried to follow all your hints and made it as natural as possible. So no raely obvious audible FX, a lot of subtle satturation and the voice in foreground. Only the girl got a clear FX to make it different and a bit more otherwordly.

What a cool song! I just went with my gut on this one and gave it a lot of depth (it's a pretty deep song). I hope you like it.

Hey, guys.

That was... creepy?

Nice tune, Slacker. I really dig the arrangement so I tried to feature every instrument in the different sections of the song. Hope you like it!
