1. Is there any information anywhere about different types of rhythm in terms of the subtle deviation of notes off the grid?
It seems critical in making a tune which makes you feel something or makes you want to move.
2. Is it just about randomisation and swing?
3. Is rhythm always about moving notes left or right by mss and the articulation of instruments or is the time between bars and beats changing slightly a factor as well?
4. Is there a good groove library?
5. Does every live song just have it's own natural complex groove?
Any info or insight on this subject would be great!
Thanks
Michael

Does your DAW have swing control like FL Studio? Give that a try for sure.
And besides velocity randomisation etc, automation is your best friend!

In Live, I like to make grooves out of whatever (usually a simple percussion pattern on a drum machine with nice swing, often Audio Damage Tattoo. Record a clip then extract groove), then copy that groove to make one for each channel I want to apply the groove to. When applying the groove to clips I fine tune the clock division, timing, quantization, randomness, and velocity amount to taste for each.
Which reminds me velocity variation is another nice way to add movement.
