Hi,

I'm new to Reaper, I found KVR today with the one vst challenge. I am super stoked to be here. I'm using Crust, it's really cool, I have an ambient noise. It would be awesome if I could get some advice on how make an echo sound. Specifically, is there a type of plugin that deals with resonance. Also, if possible It would be amazing if anybody had links to Reaper tutorials. Thank you so much, I'm sending happy vibes!

I think it's best I have a look in the Getting Started forum first. It is very late.

Not sure what you are talking about but usually echo is a delay.
With resonance ? I'm not sure again what you mean but what comes to mind is a resonant filter or some comb filtering plugin.
Maybe you mean a reverb ?

Anyway...here are some suggestions:

I don't know what is your budget, but be sure to check all the plugins in your DAW, often they are good. Also if you buy the latest Music Computer for a couple of bucks, you will get 70 plugins free:

Take a reverb IR(impulse response) in a track

Add some weird drastic volume automation

Volla you have a echo type reverb

Or go an check out some vst like
1.mturboreverb - might be an an overkill but i love to program it and is capable of making any type of reverb or echo
2.echo boy - its gold but again expensive
3. Valhalla dsp vsts-never had any experience but my friends say they are good
Win 10 x64 with specs enough to run DAW without bouncing any track
KZ IEM,32-bit 384Khz dac running at 32bit 48Khz
mainly use REAPER, MTotalbundle, Unfiltered Audio TRIAD and LION, NI classic collection,......... ETC

Echoes can be achieved a few different ways.

One way is with a delay, which repeats the audio exactly after an interval you specify. You can tell it to repeat several times with a feedback control. You can have multiple repetitions at different intervals. These are called taps. This starts to simulate how sound can bounce (reflect) off different surfaces. Reaper has a delay called, appropriately enough, ReaDelay. There are tutorial videos about it here: http://reaper.fm/videos.php#eT1867zzmFw and http://reaper.fm/videos.php#rG35-UunteM

A reverb is kind of like many, many taps modelling how sound reflects off surfaces at various angles, until it diffuses into indistinct taps. Poor reverbs will sound extremely metallic, as the taps are still distinct. Good reverbs will sound smoother. Reaper has an algorithmic reverb called ReaVerbate, but it is poor. You can dampen the higher frequencies to try and smooth it out. Tutorial video here: http://reaper.fm/videos.php#pUYhRSJ4ao0

Fortunately, Reaper also has a fantastic convolution reverb called ReaVerb. Convolution reverbs use impulse responses, which are a sort of audio fingerprint of a space. Load an impulse response of say, the Sydney Opera House, and whatever audio goes through it sounds like it's happening in the Sydney Opera House. You can get free impulse responses here: https://www.propellerheads.se/blog/free ... -responses then watch tutorial videos on how to use ReaVerb here: http://reaper.fm/videos.php#d_oJzLYKUpI and http://reaper.fm/videos.php#zxD_RvRULok

As for resonance, it's best to control it at the source if possible. If not, you can use an EQ to decrease gain at whatever frequency the resonance is. If the reverb is creating a resonance for some reason, you can EQ that.

If you're new to Reaper, though, it's best if you first go through the "Reaper Explained" video series on this page: http://reaper.fm/videos.php then watch the other videos as you need them.

Thank you for your responses. Your comments are very in depth and I have learned a lot! I will have a play around with some reverb and delay VSTs plugins that are in Reaper but also some of the ones recommended by you. On reflection, I think it is important that I learn the basics first. I can only commit a few hours a day to learning a DAW and I am struggling to use Reaper and wanted to buy FL Studio Producers Edition but I read online that FL Studio has limitations which Reaper doesn't. I feel like I am stalling by not choosing a DAW, but your advice is really helpful because these tutorials might help my learning process. I want to make some soothing music stuff like Shlohmo, Burial, Fourtet etc. So I am just spending a bit of time a day trying to improve. I will go through the tutorial videos, and then when I get to the point of reverb and delay I will let you know how it goes. Thank you.

Hi again,

I've done some experimenting and I found ReaVerbate to give me a nice sound with turning the room size all the way up, increasing wet and decreasing dry. I know it's pretty basic. I think there is a way for me to drop the wet and increase the delay to get a really nice sound, I will have to spend more time with these plug ins. Anyway, thanks again for the advice.
