For me the #1 free one is still Podium Free, but Tracktion 4 can potentially take its place now that it's become freeware. I'll spend some time testing it next week.

Thanks for the notice. Tracktion has been on my radar since it was resurrected. It's cross-platform, clever, straight-forward, and inexpensive. I own two licenses of v2 and liked using it as a testing ground for free VSTs on Windows, and i absolutely LOVE the racks feature. I wish Logic had that type of modular plugin routing interface. I live plugging stuff into stuff in weird and random ways (that's why I like Reason, though that gets above my ability to keep track of things, hah hah). Almost nothing supports modular routing like that (and those that do, usually don't give you manual control over each channel of the L-R pair).

Didn't like the fact that Podium free used only one cpu core, so never tried it. Gonna try Tracktion 4. Wonder will there be updates in the future e.g when version 7 comes out will v5 become free etc?

Speaking of Traction 4 free and VST hosting... Is it a true 64-bit program that will host 64-bit VSTs on windows? Would it be better to install this than some other host? Reason is my main DAW, so I obviously need something to host VST plugs on the side - Melodyne Editor being the main reason I need it. Thanks.

Downloaded, installed, no problem.

I want to like it, but there are a number of queerness that I think would make it difficult. I think I will still be using Studio One.

Also provides a cheap upgrade to T6 (which comes with a licence for Melodyne Essential)

The upgrade is only $30 (from any previous version I believe) but I can't see that being valid from this free version... nobody would ever pay full price for it..

A 'freeware' DAW with C/R activation. Er, no thanks.

What's wrong with the activation?

This is a genuine question, I don't see the problem.

Because this means it's not free.

It's a bait, an unrestricted-demo of obsolete* software as a gateway to the new-and-improved, state-of-the-art Tracktion 6 (and 7....). Who wouldn't upgrade for a measly 30 bucks (or something)?!
