Cubase 9.5.10 - cannot process any audio!

I'm really struggling with this:
No matter what I do Cubase ignores any kind of audio processing I try to apply (reverse, normalise etc).
On-line processing, off-line processing - nothing works.
I do notice that the list of processes that is built as you apply them have an exclamation mark where you would expect a tick and I can't audition anything as the play button in the editor is ignored (as is the one in the Sample Editor).
Something must be set wrong in my version of Cubase, else everyone would be up in arms about this.
It's so frustrating to see videos on YouTube where you can see real-time changes to the waveforms and mine sit there doing nothing at all!

Please help before I harm something....

So I completely re-installed from scratch and it still didn't work but I also downloaded the demo song from the Steinberg site and low and behold I can edit audio in that project.
Now very confused and very tired (it's 2 in the morning now!!!!).

Are you selecting a section of audio when trying to do this? You must first select a section of your audio file.

I am indeed - I can edit audio in the Cubase demo so I know how to do it.
Today's task is to record some audio into the demo song and see if I can edit it.

Make sure your e-licenser is plugged in correctly.

The eLicenser Control Centre can see it and I can edit in the demo.
I have attempted to make a starter template out of the demo by removing everything and saving its bare bones to be able to start with a project that will allow audio editing. Unfortunately this template will not let me hear the metronome - and yes I do know how to use it.
I tell you, you couldn't make this stuff up.
At the moment by feeling towards Cubase 9.5 are getting very hostile. I just want to make frigging music - not spend hours and hours getting really pee'd off with it all.

PS "Frigging music" is not a porn film soundtrack.

Anyway you can do a video to show us what you are doing?
thanks

Since you get no result trying to play back audio - I would look at hardware settings for this project that cause you problems.

Load demo project that works - save a preset for outputs.
Then load problem project and load that preset.

Starting new projects you always have to do that hardware setup that correspond to your system.

I had plenty problems with templates in various daws that need some changes before they work.

I think I've sussed it.
I'm using my E drive to store the projects rather than the system drive (C), it appears Cubase doesn't like that.
I moved a problem project to a C drive location and I could record and edit the audio as expected.
This is good news (I made it work) and bad as my SSD is small and my E drive is huge.

I have all my Cubendo projects on non C drives.
that can't be the issue.

it may not be the location, but the permissions where he was trying to write. I also don't have anything on my C drive.

I had a problem with Cubase/Windows 10 recently - I couldn't save anything, no projects, no presets, no nothing. No problems before hand, just turned the pc on one morning, and this.
Did all the usual. Even checked to see if permissions had been changed, somehow. Nothing worked.
But...
Then I noticed that no other programs could save - not Notepad, my video editor, my image editor, nothing.
Gave up after 3 days and re-installed the whole caboodle. Actually went back to Win 7. (Yeah, I know, luddite!)
But about 6 months ago I had a different problem with Win 10. The Start menu disappeared. The only programs I could access were the ones pinned to the Taskbar.
Another re-install. :dog:
Just sayin'.
