Cubase 9.5: MIDI controller on active track

I have a MIDI controller connected to a particular track in Cubase but when I select another track it stops working.
How do I lock the controller to the single track?

Stupid question: Did you activate monitoring for the to-be-controlled track?
The manual also says that MIDI through has to be active:

Monitor
Routes incoming MIDI to the selected MIDI output. For this to work, activate MIDI Thru Active in the Preferences dialog (MIDI page).

I never read the manual either, TBH. Actually, i only took a look to see if "monitoring" is the right term, because i only know the German terminology from my Cubase.
