Hello
I am starting at close to zero, so any help will be much appreciated.
For Christmas I got a Behringer UMC22, electric guitar, and Boss Katana 50 amp. I just downloaded Tracktion 6, and have synced it with the UMC22.
I have a microphone, the electric guitar, I play bass guitar and have amps for both guitars.
I have never used a DAW, that is what I mean by close to zero. I need drum samples, and the ability to write the drum patterns/loops with changing tempos. Is this what is called a plug-in? If so are there free ones that can be downloaded into Tracktion to get started in the writing process?
Thanks for your time.

A plugin is basically an effect or instrument that you use in your DAW, like a drum machine or a delay effect.

A good free drum tool is MT Power Drum. Here's a video which shows how to set up and use it with Tracktion 5.

Thanks for the quick reply.

+1 for MTPowerDrumKit. Sounds pretty great. Also have a look at http://www.vst4free.com, plenty of great free stuff to keep you busy for days. Tracktion is a good place to start too.

Fixed.

I suggest to ask here for specific things instead of downloading everything there might be on the Internet, as this proces is endless and you won't get any track done this way. At most mess up your system :hihi:

Welcome to the forum...and say goodbye to your life...

As others have pointed out, powerdrum is a nice self-contained starting point and is not too confusing or cluttered. When you're ready to start branching out with a few more drumkits then this is a good place to look;

https://bedroomproducersblog.com/2010/0 ... full-kits/

Some of these samples you won't be able to use as they need the full (paid) version of Native Instruments Kontakt sampler plug-in, but a lot of them are in the open SFZ format which means there are various other plug-ins which will load them, such as sforzando;

or my preference, tx16w;

Come back and ask if you get bemused!

In many cases it's preferable to record guitar and especially bass directly through the audio interface. In that case you probably want something to process them "in the box".

Here are two suggestions for free plugins:

Guitar amp modeller: http://www.timespace.com/product/FREETH ... ad%29.html

Also, if you have Tracktion, go to the sub-forum on KVR and get the FREE manual available for T6/T7 by Bill Edstrom. Don't have to read it cover to cover (boring!) - but it's a great reference and you can start with recording audio, etc. There's some good tips on how to adjust for latency when recording audio in there that are pretty important.

DON'T buy a million plugs! Find one synth you like, and find one drum plug you like. Tracktion has a built in sampler and you can find millions of samples online.

For a synth, I recommend Charlatan VST or TAL Noise Maker as great first synths. And they are free!

For a drum machine, I recommend MDrummer small from Melda.

DON'T listen to this guy on faith! :hihi:

Okay, but really, figure out what works best for you. Start with one plugin you like if you decide to invest, learn it, and then go from there if you feel like your workflow would be complimented by another. Personally, I've gotten pretty comfortable with Synthmaster, Serum, AIEP3, and Iris 2. It's just a matter of finding what's going to suit your style of production, so try not to make all your purchasing decisions based on what someone else tells you. :tu:
