There are no must have synths.
I beg to differ....

There's no "must haves", I've got a handful of (commercial) synths and any one of them would be enough to make fantastic music until the end of my days. If there's anything like free "must haves" to me that would be instruments that provide something different, either in terms of the capabilities they have or in the way they're operated (it sometimes helps me to shake things up a little).

For me that would be Full Bucket Music's ModulAir, Majken's Chimera and Serenity Pro by HGFortune.

I like the other free u-he synths too -- TyrellN6 and Triple Cheese. I'm not actually sure when they came out. I've got BazilleCM and ZebraCM which I think are great too, but I had to do a somewhat pain in the ass short subscription to Computer Music magazine for those (no regrets though, worthwhile publication with lots of free stuff).

Alpha3 by LinPlug scrubs up very well. You might even own a copy of it. I do.

Thousands of presets. Most of them usable. I love it for the Noise Osc that has White and Pink and Brown noise.

Then there is the new kid on the block that is totally free:

What a great little synth. The Modulation is amongst the easiest I have ever used. You could Wub-Wub yourself to death with this one if you were Dubstep inclined.

I can't say how much I love this little synth. In fact. Have some presets for it!

16 Presets based on one of the first presets from the factory. Both in .fxp and .fxb bank format. If you wanna Wubba-Wubba, this is how you do it! And all in FM too!

Synth1 is no doubt most useful old free(q) i have ever touch - you can put it everywhere in d mix,but definitely need reverb and whatever fx you miss on it.
I haven't release anything for it soon, but have new stuff in progress,so will demo it here when remain more time.
Cheers :)

Me too, always one of the first things reinstalled after a rebuild, kind of 'old school digital va' but I love the bass and percussive sounds it can make.

I love that too, easy, woozy, slightly broken pads a cinch.
