If I switch back to built-in output, it works.
Has anybody had this problem?

Post

I assume that's on Mac, right?
It seems that some devices are reporting to have no audio outputs.
In that case MuLab cannot run, it needs at least 1 audio output.

Post

It's on Mac, yes.
It's lot really an issue, but good to know the cause - thanks.

Just a double-check:
When you have selected your usb headphone in MuLab right-click the cpu meter (in the transport panel, right to the metronome) -> audio engine stats. I assume it says Num Outputs = 0, right?

Post

Num Outputs = 0, yes.

Post

Well that's the very issue then. MuLab asks the headphone driver how many outputs it has and the headphone driver answer is 0. Weird.

Post

I would say - bad headphones.
Maybe a user friendly message like "The selected output device does not provide any outputs" or so?

Try creating an Aggregate Device:
https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT202000
MuLab will recognise it in Audio Setup.

Ok, I tried that: the audio engine starts and sound only comes out of the other(, non-USB-C headphone device) of the aggregate device.
