First of all, congratulation to all developers!
I don't know why, but i have a strange feeling about this year entries. First of all i believe we have a clear winner (based on what happened on last two Developer Challenges), and second, i don't see big innovations....

Well, innovation per se wasn't a requirement of the DC. The idea is that everyone votes according to their own criteria. So it's up to the developer to decide what audience he will try to appeal to.
I can only speak for myself, but when the DC14 was announced, I sat down and looked through all the ideas I had accumulated over time. I picked up 4:
1. A very experimental and innovative one, but with little chance I could get it to work properly in time.
2. Innovative and useful, but very situational
3. Rather conventional, but something I'm good at
4. Innovative and useful, guaranteed to work, but something that only few would need.

So I deliberately settled on #3.
In my opinion, I'd rather see a developer challenge with some particular goal set each time. It may be a lesser scale, but held more often. In addition it would block out those who were just fortunate enough to be already working on something when the DC is announced.

Do we want really always only higher, better, further?
Sometimes needs time to notice what helps and what not .

Post

Well OP, no disrespect, but I sort of think that that is kind of a selfish/short sighted/shameful point of view.

Ffs, "BIg innovations"....

If thats what you want, pay for professional tools.

There is a dynamic eq/compressor entry.
A resynthesis entry.
A f**king sample sourcing entry.
A xoxos entry that is sure to be nothing if not innovative.
And we have bitching about 'innovation'.
I guess that is a good thing, sort of, in a weird way?

I've never seen a free spectral resynthesis tool before. I've not tried it yet, but to me that's kind of a big thing considering how few synths do this - even commercial ones.

If you mean that you personally didn't find any plugins that you wanted, that's on you.

I've only downloaded two so far, and they're both staying on my computer. I see at least 2-3 others that I plan on trying soon, and another 2 or 3 that seem interesting. I'll be able to rate my top 5 no problem.

I wasn't too thrilled w/the descriptions (the 1st year was mind-blowingly original), but so far they've all been very good. I can't get the Res one to download yet, it keeps resetting.

everything. but really, what was missing was x64 version. that's the issue in a nut shell.

Post

Some people can't deliver X64, Mac, Linux, IOS, Android, or any other fancy stuff. I had to settle for Windows 32 bit since there is still compatibility with Windows 8. I dunno what you're b**ching about when it comes to the plugins developed this year, and this early no less! It's like xmas so get your gifts, and enjoy them! If you found none to enjoy, than that's your own fault.

I wanted to come up with some awesome synth this year, however I encountered bugs that where insurmountable this short time, so I had to drop it for a more easier approach. I know how to handle text query's, and thus I decided to make a plugin to help look for samples. Not that I liked to do that though.

I think innovation is overrated, especially in audio. If I have the choice between an "innovative" plugin that has a bad GUI, a sucky workflow and a mediocre sound and one that is usable, well designed and sounds good, I'd chose the latter one every day. But that's just me...
There is such an abundance if plugins (free and paid) out there nowadays, practically everything has been made, so I think it is great that there are still developers who stand up to the challenge and take part in DC. kudos!
Though I also wish there would be more x64 compatibility. I have nothing against 32bit, and I know I could bridge, but when I finally went 64bit i did it consequently, no compromises. I know that it's mostly a Synthedit related problem and I hope until the next DC they've fixed that...

I think innovation is overrated
I think the so-called innovation which does not answer to any real need is overrated. The "innovative" plugin that has a bad GUI, a sucky workflow and a mediocre sound may be innovative only in the head of his developer.

I personally thought it was quite cool to get exactly something I'd asked for quite a while ago, at the time I couldn't find it:

I've not tried it yet though.

Thanks to all the devs for this years entries, didn't know this was going on as I don't visit the site often, came across a post on facebook and was pleasantly surprised to find the entries. So far Rez3 is sounding like the clear winner for me.

Post

Just got Rez3, wow totally cool. Don't think you can turn down the lfo, but you can the env follower.

Anyways entrants need to get real web servers. I had a hell of a time getting this on a slow connection, had to trick my download manager. This isn't 1995, downloads should resume, or get a Dropbox/box.net account.
