I admit to a kneejerk reaction. But once I did the thing, it was amusing for several minutes just to watch it go.codec_spurt wrote:I wouldn't call it 'disruptive technology' yet. But it might turn out to be a bit annoying to some (apart from jancivil) .
'disruptive technology' is strong and I would prefer to remain generous to the developer who is also having a good time with something.
But, being this reliant on a computer to know what's happening is to my view not the best situation for a person.

It's too bad the original riffstation.com is gone. I vaguely remember hearing about it a few years ago. I didn't check it out then because I thought it was more to do with guitars or something, or for generating chord progressions for you. And now it's gone.
Kind of makes me wonder just how "disruptive" this technology really was...or what really happened. I see you can still get the app if you dig for it (they gave it away before going out of business, apparently), but I'm more interested in what happened to the company. To me, the technology behind things like this and Shazam are nothing short of magic. (That said, I think "Shazam" is a stupid name for a cool app.)

doesnt listen to music to tell you the chords to play, but for guitar and a whole lot of stringed instruments in any tuning it will show you how to construct any chord, again in any tuning and many stringed instruments...also shows scales/modes and the relations between scales and chords. I bought this software around 2003 or 2004, love it...chordwizard gold 2.5

Was the "No sharps or flats in C" statement made with respect to the notes of the B Major Seventh Flat-Five chord (B-D#-F-A#)?The Noodlist wrote: ↑Thu Apr 08, 2021 9:39 am There seems to be a mistake on this website, so I removed it from my previous post.

No, my mistake. I thought B minor 7th flat 5 -Bm7b5. I should have looked at the intervals below, the spelling threw me. I still wonder how I managed to pass the ABRSM Music Theory Grade 6 examtonedef71 wrote: ↑Tue May 04, 2021 1:31 amWas the "No sharps or flats in C" statement made with respect to the notes of the B Major Seventh Flat-Five chord (B-D#-F-A#)?The Noodlist wrote: ↑Thu Apr 08, 2021 9:39 am There seems to be a mistake on this website, so I removed it from my previous post.

this point'll seem kinda pedantic but you might want to have it.
B^7b5 in "B Lydian" for instance isn't, the scale already has E# naturally.
The whole flat five thing starts from the Common Practice Period and building triads and seventh chords 'normally'. B-7b5 is vii7 of C and it's known as 'the half-diminished seventh', 'half-diminished' sufficient enough label to denote it. (vii7 of C minor (that is on the leading tone B) is a full diminished seventh.)
"minor 7/flat 5" is a jazz name. In that diatonic usage there the flat 5 part of the name is redundant.
Probably the first flat 5 sort of function is the French Sixth chord, which works as a secondary dominant.
EG., in A minor: F A D (iv6) is, by augmenting the 6 made into an augmented sixth chord F A D#, the basic Italian version (don't ask me!), adding C for the German and your French flats the 5. Only it's called B (it's already in the key after all). But now you have a dominant type which does the same thing as a flat five substitute for B7, F A B D# (usu. F A Cb Eb) heading to E7. (First thing that happens in Tristan und Isolde, with an appoggiatura G# which looks/sounds for a second like a half-diminished on F (F Cb Eb Ab). Shook people up, that. E7 there enjoys a #11 for a moment, too.)
The putative flat five in the B^7b5 reminds me of that B spelling in that harmony.
