I'm struggling with bar 6 here (the last bar shown), what do the 'connected' notes mean, and how do I count this, that I reach 5/4 resp. 10/8 (presuming the little A# is a suspension ?)

Think I got it, I count the notes 'together' as it was one staff, right ?
Then I get 5/4.

The A# is a grace note; it has no durational value. This's why it's notated with the slash-through.

It exists in the space between notes.
