Live Mode requests

Pharaoh,
You may be able to accomplish the same result by triggering your arrangements and then muting/unmuting various virtual output channels for your kick, snare, hats, etc.
Nicfit is working on a project for me that might be of some help later (down the road a ways) which uses a grid which you simply navigate with the arrow keys (similar to Live's session view) to send custom midi notes or CC's to trigger arrs in live mode.
There's also Trollo and NDCmidichanneliser - some combination of using that might be the ticket. A place to start at least...
You're ideas are good. I just don't have the same workflow since I have a dedicated midi controller.

I would d like to see something like "do like the above do":
a third state of the button start that make your pattern "sleep" and start as soon as the above button starts. so triggering a group will trigger all "sleeping start" from this group, triggerin the sequencer start button will start all groups in "sleepin start" mode.
then we could have the normal start to live independently whatever the next level do, so you could start just one arr/var without starting the group, starting a group without starting the seq, etc... for me it sounds really more powerfull that the way we currently have, as in live improvisation, you can start any patt/var you want without having to think to the above state, and you can keep on starting groups without problems with the sleep mode.
then... could we have trigger markers back?? abletons stole this idea and we don't have it anymore in xt. maybe we could a find a way to make it live with the live mode??

I don't quite get it. Currentl, if you have parts playing in a group and you turn teh group off teh parts are still in play mode but ARE sleeping until the group is turned to play.silicon/silicium wrote:... a third state of the button start that make your pattern "sleep" and start as soon as the above button starts. so triggering a group will trigger all "sleeping start" from this group, triggerin the sequencer start button will start all groups in "sleepin start" mode.

This sounds like something I could use ASAP. Any idea how far down the line Nicfit plans on finishing this project?Exit Zero wrote: Nicfit is working on a project for me that might be of some help later (down the road a ways) which uses a grid which you simply navigate with the arrow keys (similar to Live's session view) to send custom midi notes or CC's to trigger arrs in live mode.

I'm adding a vote for additional quantize options - specifically Loop length at the Playgroup and Arrangement level.
I want to use XT to allow realtime arrangement of songs - Verses, Chorus, Bridge, etc, but each section must complete before transition to the next (or the section loops). Also, as XT is not my primary instrument (it will be controlled via footpedal while I play the guitar), I want to choose that transition well ahead of time, not in the last few beats.
Even Live5 does not allow this sort of quantization at the scene level
(not that I can afford Live)
Also some sort of Follow Actions would be great. And Arm triggers for recording.
I cannot be the only person who wants to do this sort of thing (flexible backing songs)

Speaking of loop length I got really frustrated today that variations couldn't have their own length! If var 1 has a length of 2 so does var 2 (that makes fill variations no fun)
I really don't like the hierarchy of arrangments and variations at all. variations should be independant (you should be able to play two variations of the same arrangement at the same time if you want and they should have their own lengths. They shgould also default to the same exclusive group.)
Ps I like the loop length quantize idea but I was thinking of quantize to end of loop currently playing in the same exclusive group! If verse and chorus are in the same exclusive group then you could press verse in the middle of chorus and verse would start when chorus was done.
[live mode and multi mode could be so great but they have so many problems

Yeah I am really frustrated. I coupled Ext with Bidule and got an interesting DJ like template which would be somewhat fun. The issue is loading arrangements into Ext vst-i. First off, i cannot pre listen to arrangements before loading, I cannot freeze because there is no time stretching, and last but definitely not least, i cannot do this DJ setup at all because i'll have a song going, i load up another and depending on what plugs are being used, it would glitch during load time.[live mode and multi mode could be so great but they have so many problems Confused]
Not good when you are performing.
ABleton Live is nice but its too much money to spend for something that is unstable as well. Not to mention, i shun typical DJing when using Live, thus i'd be spending a lot of time clicking the mouse which is no fun.
I think i am just going to buy an acoustic and be simple

I hate being this guy really I do. Ifeel like I've over stepped my bitching limit and asking for XT to be more like other software is well- stupid. BUT...
I really think the people at Live have got the loop triggering thing down. Why reinvent the wheel. If thousands are buying Live just for it's live sequencer, could't Jorgen get more business if you were to incorporate a more similar live sequecer?
Fheew- now I got that out of my system I'll be a more constructive netizen for a while...

I just posted on the live performance sticky thread how surprised I was at how much of Abletons features Ext has. I don't think many people know about it though (Ext that is)
I don;t think theres anything wrong in shameless pillaging the best ideas in Live and gracefully introducing them into ExT in appropriate form... From what I've seen of the demo so far, if anything were to be a marketing 'elevator pitch' for ExT it would be that its an "Ableton killer and a whole lot more for only 50 bucks".
Even for compter literate computer musicians, I get the sense its hard to understand what the fuss is about ExT before diggin in:
"well, you connect everything up....its so poweful...so flexible...so cool..midi...midi....so wild....its energyXT!"
But what does it DO (the newbies thinks)? Does it even do audio?

For me at the moment, the potential live-creation capabitlies of ExT is the big 'hook' at the moment.
For straightahead non-realtime compostion and editing, Fruity Loops or Podium offer a lot as well.
The tracktion demos I used never 'felt' right. Though the design is nice, there always seemed to be an extra layer between me and the music.

There is NOT ONE application of the many out there that i can honestly say is great for live purposes. Ableton was close but now it is focused on DAW capabilities more than live usage.
Ext on the other hand has a STRONG chance of becoming a great live performance application if nothing else (for those users that simply want a live performance tool).
So many DAWs, and no application made solely for LIVE PURPOSES AND LIVE PURPOSES ONLY!!!!!!
Again (yes i am venting a bit-sorry), EXT is a great DAW BUT.................It can also be a great Live performance tool with some focus on just that (maybe for the near future????)
Ok...enough venting and moaning and
and blah blah blah.

I get the impression that Ableton really didn;t want to add midi to Live... it breaks the origional paradigm. It wasn't meant as a DAW, thats why its called Live (uh duur) but seems there is big user demand. I'm not saying thats good or bad, just an observation.
I don't think Live has a file mapper yet (for midi controlled loading of sets).

For me, an application that is a good live performace progie is also a good composition tool (as long as it can record). I think the one thing that has been removed from electronic music in the last decade is the performace element. The more spontainious you can create and alter while recording and playhing the more of a performace you are adding to your composition.Former Pharaoh wrote:There is NOT ONE application of the many out there that i can honestly say is great for live purposes. Live sequncing is the key to getting the length and mood of parts right to the listener!

Yea, Vangelis had to resort to custom built hardware for his living performancing arranging needs...soma wrote:For me, an application that is a good live performace progie is also a good composition tool (as long as it can record).
