This represents some ideas for a backing track for a collaboration. Rhythms are pretty much rock&roll with some other things sprinkled in there for flava. I suppose it sort of stands on its own, too. I thought maybe some bass players out there might find it fun to warm up with.

The stereo separation seems better through monitors than headphones for some reason.

Very nice, sounds more tribal version of rock'n'roll to me, sort of literally rolling some rocks. Sounds very sterile almost ear hurting and very cinematic. Seems like a good separation on my headphones.

Very cool. I like it a lot. I have three questions for you (if you don't mind):
1. If you're using a sample library, which one (it sounds amazing)?
2. Are you using zendrum or what kind of midi controller (if it indeed is a sample library)?
3. How did you learn to write such a composition. I'm overall happy to use loops in many of my compositions, but I want to learn how to play and write percussion compositions similar to yours. are you a trained drummer, etc.?
ps: you're a genius

I have a ton of sample libraries. I'll have to go back and look what I used here. This was mostly composed months ago, and I just opened it up recently to tidy up the production so I could pass it along to my collaborator. Hard to remember what I used. It's always a combination of things, though.jeffb01 wrote:Very cool. I like it a lot. I have three questions for you (if you don't mind):

I use FL Studio's piano roll to write this stuff--just a mouse and careful attention to the articulation of accents. I rarely play anything into a computer unless it's a real guitar/bass or a synth part for which I can use my Ztar. I can program much better than I could play this sort of thing (though I can play a dumbek in a limited sort of way)
To answer your third question, I've mostly just absorbed things from other artists. Like I mentioned in my first post, this piece is really very much a 'rock' approach in how the accents on 2 and 4 are treated, and even some of the fills are placed the way a rock drummer would do it (a hyper rock drummer). It has a bit of marching band 'martial' influence, too.
Just like any musician who writes 'through-composed' pieces, I aim for little micro-forms and for a larger form that has a shape--and I try to 'groove' when I can, to get the drum lines to set up a pulse and then do surprising accents, etc. This piece climaxes a little early, but it's just really intended to put across some ideas to my collaborator. I fully intend to revisit it once I see what the drums will be interacting with...it was necessary to get some ideas out as a starting point since we're doing this over the web. If anything, it'll probably get simpler and have some really minimalist measures so that other instruments can breathe.
Genius? Oh man, I can assure you I'm not!
