The kit pieces in one expansion pack are all recorded in the same space, through the same desk (etc) and are engineered to work together. There is considerable scope to mix and match within a set the size of this new Metal Foundry SDX. Nevertheless, being able to substitute ANY snare from any pack is obviously going to be of benefit to a significant proportion of users - despite any mismatch of recording enviroments/channels/bleeds etc.
Making a completely flexible architecture which allows for on the fly changes to the layout and signal flow of the mixer to allow for this flexibility without breaking anything is probably a major undertaking. The X-drum approach offers a clunkier way in the interim but I wouldn't be surprised if a more comprehensive approach to mixing and matching components is planned.

I didn't like the EZDrummer DFH very much, I don't play metal but DFH was the closest samples around to the sort of drum sound I like (clicky metal style kicks and a poppy pearl snare) I used EXDrummer with DFH for ages but the more I used it and the more I listened to it as I tried to mix it the more I realised that it actually sounded like shit, due to lack of detail in the samples I could never get the drums up front in the mix, so I moved onto Superior for better control and quaility, so this is perfect! just the sort of drums I like recorded by a much more experienced Toontrack, I'm very excited!

I've finally had a free 5 minutes to whip out this quick drum only mp3 using The Metal Foundry SDX. It's more funk sounding and shows the libraries versatility...I hopesusiwong wrote:This looks like a sure winner, no doubt.
Maybe it's just me though, but I wish there were some more non-thrash demos.
Got absolutely no use for that double kick drone in my music, but on the other hand the 1st Superior worked great for other styles, too, and the collection of drums in this new SDX looks amazing, especially as there are several 5 tom setups included.
Hopefully somebody (Scott ? others ?) will post a song or two in other styles.
Cheers,
susiwong
And then, shame there are no brushes ...

Was hoping to hear some demos of TMF playing something other than metal as well, so this is great, thanks for the post Scott. No surprise of course that it works great out of the metal context, as I never really used DFHS for metal either, and always loved it's sound.s_sibs wrote:I've finally had a free 5 minutes to whip out this quick drum only mp3 using The Metal Foundry SDX. There's a lot to like about TMF library. The more I use it the more I like the room sound. It's not huge like the Allaire, which has it's place of course. My above example uses the close and far ambient mics (stereo pairs and mono) and they give a nice space to the kit without overpowering it. The sound are also very raw so they can, indeed, be processed to fit just about any style to and throw at them.

Here's another mp3 of TMF using different kit pieces (same crashes only) and the same MIDI as in the above example. I did change the ending MIDI to play all 3 toms though.

The snare is maple with a bit more ring to it.

I have had it for just a few days, but plan to put up a detailed overview of it here with some audio examples real soon. For now, I'll just say that it blew away my expectations.memyselfandus wrote:Anyone buy this yet? how is it?
:Edit: Decided it would be best put in it's own thread, so it's sittin over in sampling. http://www.kvraudio.com/forum/viewtopic ... 31#3681131

I totally agree. Let's hope TT listens to this suggestion.Dewdman42 wrote: I should be able to click on a kit piece such as a snare and see a list of ALL snares that are currently installed from any of the expansions.

Nice examples, Scott ! Thank you !
From my own experience I can confirm MF is really cool even if, like me, you don't particularly like metal drum sounds.
And I completely agree with Dewdman42's suggestion.
Though it's probably far from trivial to implement, I don't see any drawbacks from a user's view. Kit pieces from other sessions could be marked with a # or something as prefix, leaving it up to the user to decide.
Even better, I'd like to have a preview mode that immediately loads a single sample of the drumpiece in question, at a user defined velocity.
When you've found your candidate just switch off preview and the complete kit piece loads.
I'm familiar with using X-Drums, but they always feel like a clunky workaround to me.

The list would be too huge for those with a bunch of expansions, so it really wouldn't work IMO. I've seen this brought up to TT as well, and their reasoning included the fact that they want to emphasize the realism gained from using the kits as they were recorded. So each kit is played back exactly as it was during tracking. Of course the fact that almost all of the kits have different micing options would pose a problem to a large list method as well.klagga2 wrote:I totally agree. It will be interesting to see how TT handles these questions, particularly since they will be introducing EZX electronic drums this fall. Not that I know how they are supposed to work, but I expect that I'll be able to handle those in SD as well, and that there will be quite a few different electronic snares, kicks, etc to choose between.Cyrosis wrote:The list would be too huge for those with a bunch of expansions, so it really wouldn't work IMO. I, for one, would like to be able to quickly switch, mix and match between individual traditional acoustic drum components (snares, kicks, etc) and their electronic counterparts in SD. As far as I can see that won't be managable without TT do some design adjustments in SD in the direction to what dewdman42 has suggested.
