This looks very tempting. I have one question. How does this software compare to Addictive Drums or BFD? I considered getting AD for just under $200.00
I like its versatility and simplicity- plus it sounds good.
Can the drums in Ocean Way's set be manipulated in Kontact player as much as AD drums in its shell?
Or, is it more of a "real" drum set meant for emulating live drummer in a great studio?

No knock to AD, BFD or any of those drum plug-ins. They're all great. But, the sounds are going to be different and that is perhaps the main thing to consider. If you want sounds from this particular world-class studio done the way OWD was done as well as famous drummer's kit sounds from Drum Masters to then that alone is a reason to get it - even if you also were to get AD or BFD or anything else if you also wanted that. You may or may not need it. This Ultimate Studio Drums bundle with the Infinite Player (Kontakt Player) is also versatile and simple to use. You have a LOT of control of the sound from built-in effects to mixing kick, snare, individual toms etc. to how they respond with round robin to convolution ambience (allows you to use different studio room or chamber ambience on kits - a flexible feature for even more variety in sounds) to making your own custom kit combinations to EXPANDING your sound collection (we have more kit samples than most - AND you can also add other instruments besides just drums like percussion, piano, strings... and that you can't do with the other drum plug-ins).Thuneau wrote:This looks very tempting. So, it is more than just a real drum set emulation. You can do a lot with this system. For $99 it's totally worth getting and remember this is the only time we'll be offering it at that price and eventually this particular product bundle won't be available anymore at all.

I've tried both demos and there are just as many effects within the kontakt mixer (maybe a few more even) as with addictive, although addictive has a faster interface for effects tweaking regarding quality can't say. Regarding the kits no they are not as flexible as these are mixdown kits so you down't have overhead and room channels just the individual drum channels, but they are giving away room impulses to add "room" to the dry kits, but you do get way more kit peices and they can be mix and matched. That being said though from playing with the demo kit it sounds great much better than what I could get with addictive drums, this is because its a professional mixdown of the particular kit and room, mics ect. and I have little experience with drum mixing or mixing in general.
give it a try http://www.downloadablesoundz.com/frees ... freesoundz half way down the page
don't forget though if the group buy goes to 300 you also get ezplayer pro and extra midi beats ,which is usefull with everything especialy addictive drums since the midi browser is so horrible (just my opinion)

If you use the extended iMap of OWD then it does help to have a 73-88 key keyboard. Although you can still play it on a 61 or even a 49. The latest round robin iMap can even more easily be played on a 49 without a problem. But yeah if you have a full 88 that's nice! I like it. But I even play it on a two octave Novation too soo... it works with practically anything really. For real time access to all of it though you'll want 4-5 octaves available to you at least.trueparadox wrote:Those new imaps sound cool! But, it sounds like they will need an 88 key midikeyboard? I will upgrade my 49key one soon, and i was planning to get a 61-key unit as it didnt seem to lose too many sounds, only splashes really... But that hybrid keymap really sounds like it maps pretty much every key? Would it work on a 61 key unit? How well?

Well, the Infinite Player is NI's Kontakt Player with a special authorization and library module inside that can run Sonic Reality's Infinite Player format sounds such as the sounds in this group buy. There is a challenge response to authorize the Infinite Player done through NI's service center.GeorgeZ wrote:That vid was very GOOL!Actually, that was F#%^&ing insane! Love it!
I'm quite keen on this GB, just a few things:
Straight off the bat, I despise NI, so, what's the deal with the Infinity player? Whats it's relation to NI? What is the CP like? C/R?
Then, the more important Q. How many velocity layers per drum/cymbal? How many variations(hit variations) is there, per velocity layer level? I hope these questions make sense![]()
Thanks
-GeorgeZ
PS: Squiddles! Mad skills man, great video... I just had to say it one more time!
As far as how many velocities per drum this varies from kit piece to kit piece and from kit to kit. It isn't done in a way where I could just say 20 or something. There's also shared velocities with alternate round robin hits and different positions of the drum for timbral variation. So for a kit at these sizes the samples are spread around where needed the most - sometimes that's more velocities of a single position and sometimes it is spread over multiple alternating hits and alternate positions. The goal is to have a great sounding kit overall and staying ideally under a gigabyte per kit so it is easily downloadable.
Other collections we have go for the full throttle on all of the above and a kit can be up to 8 gigabytes in size! If one is going for the maximum specs of both velocities and alternate hits/positions then they could get something like EpiK DrumS A Ken Scott Collection or the upcoming Neil Peart Drum library (also available for BFD2). But just one or two Neil Peart kits costs as much or more than this whole bundle which has over 25 kits and a lot of variety. All relative. We try to find a good balance for musical usability and efficiency without compromising audio quality (everything is still 24 bit and 48k or higher and no data compression).

lordnielson wrote:Squids were the Drum Masters recorded to tape or disk ?
Specifically the Ringbeat kit sounds quite tapey.
Additionally where could one find info on the gear and studios used to record the Drum Masters kits.
And one more. How are the samples processed in the infinite player. Round robin with how many layers ? etc..
Yep...

Where Ocean Way Drums were all recorded in the same room - Studio B at Ocean Way Recording in Hollywood, California (which ironically is right next door to East West's studio!) the Drum Masters series is recorded in a variety of studios in different places around the world. If we're talking about the Drum Masters kits in this bundle most of them were recorded at our studio down here in Miami which is an SSL room (although we use API mic pres, Neve and other outboard mic pres on the way in as well as an "Abbey Road" rack for Beatlesque recording - if you want a tour of that gear you can watch www.sonicreality.tv ) in studio area next to the Hit Factory. Also if you want to see even more videos this was freshly done last month: http://www.keyboardmag.com/article/vint ... 009/103381 The actual room we did the John Blackwell sessions in is the next studio over though which is a larger room and actually has a better SSL room than what we have in ours (and the Carson SSL doesn't belong to us, it's just there for us to use). So the "JB" kits and snares were recorded there. JB standing for John Blackwell but mainly referring to the entire sample session, not what John Blackwell played for his Drummer Pack - that was a Tama Star Classic and a Yamaha Birch Jazz kit.
The other main studio used for Drum Masters kits in this group buy is in Pasadena, California and used to belong to Kevin Gilbert who had it created and the drum room modeled after The Townhouse in London which is sadly no longer around. We recorded there with Ross Garfield of The Drum Doctors and Nick D'Virgilio of Tears For Fears (also played with Genesis, Peter Gabriel and his own band Spock's Beard... and both he and I used to play with Kevin Gilbert and I used to work at that studio in the mid 90's - GREAT sounding room). So, the Premier and Grestch kits plus the Tama Nirvana snare were recorded there - more ambient place.
There are a few studios in Nashville that were also used for Drum Masters and the Blues, Soul, Ringo, Ed Greene (besides the one recorded at Bill Schee's in the mid 90's - kind of Steely Danish) and the Bonham kit. One studio called Java Jive has a cool bookshelf in the live room which acts as a good difusion device... plus you can pick up a book if you're waiting for a hard drive to copy! Another studio had a stone room which was used for the Classic Rock kit.
Jerry Marotta's kit was recorded at Jerrsville which is his own studio in Woodstock, New York. Tony Levin lives close by and stopped over for a visit! Danny Gottlieb's kit was recorded in a studio in Ft Lauderdale that is no longer around. Steve Gadd and Bill Bruford weren't recorded by us but they were recorded in LA studios I believe.
Other studios used for Drum Masters series include Mark Knopfler's British Grove studios which is like an Abbey Road meets a modern high tech Neve studio (they actually have the original EMI consoles as well as Neve and API consoles), The Farm which is Genesis' studio (both these two studios have impulses of the rooms included in this group buy), a place called Emblem Studios which used to be called American but it's now Rob Thomas's studio from Matchbox 20, we recorded Bill Cobham at a studio called Long View Farm outside of Boston, Bob Siebenberg at a studio called New Monkey in The Valley and we've done sessions at other studios in Florida, New York (even the Hit Factory years ago in NYC) and LA. Some studios are more famous but we don't mention the name in the product or marketing and others are just inside connections to great privately owned studios. Sometimes we use a studio that a particular engineer we're working with wants to work in because of the room or console or the monitoring. Ken Scott likes to mix down at Total Access which is near Redondo Beach. When we're in LA we often rent a "portable Ocean Way rig" from Classic Rentals which is owned by Ocean Way Recording. We did that with Nick Raskulinecsz when we recorded Neil Peart at the Drum Channel Studio (which is an audio and video studio near the DW factory).
That's a lot of traveling! It's taken us YEARS just to sample let alone edit so many THOUSANDS and THOUSANDS of samples of nearly every brand drum kit including custom kits from famous drummers like the ones we've mentioned. A major dedication to drum sampling that is now being released with deluxe features for both keyboard and V-Drum/E-Drum use. FINALLY!
