i'm still downloading, and have been sick for the last week; in other words haven't got to play around with the stuff yet. anyone have any ideas on which kits are good for a dead sounding 70's kit, or a ringo vibe?

You're right. The multis folder was missing with the NKMs. That is being replaced now. Sorry about that. Each person at the company has officially messed up at least one in this one. Sort of embarrassing. I've had to feed them all to the gators and sharks so there's just me left and I deserve to go as well so "Bye!".zedd wrote:Hey Squids,Squids wrote:Some kits cross over between NKX's. The Stairway Levee kit pools from both those nkx's and comes with the DM Misc Kits zip now in your download area.
I suspect that you may still be working on the cross over kits, but in case you thought that they were included with the "DM2 Misc Kit Pieces", I just discovered that they are not. I dropped the ZIP onto the Infinite Library Installer and it did install all the kit pieces, as expected. What it did not install were the Kit Multis that go with them.
Until the kits are posted, we can audition the kit pieces by loading them directly from the IP Instruments folder and not the Multis folder.
Should be there momentarily.

For that you'd really want this www.epikdrums.com There's a Ringo kit there by one of the people who recorded The Beatles.michael2 wrote:i'm still downloading, and have been sick for the last week; in other words haven't got to play around with the stuff yet. anyone have any ideas on which kits are good for a dead sounding 70's kit, or a ringo vibe?
OR for less there is a good Ringo kit on Drum Masters 2 Signature Kits Vol. 2 coming out. A Multitrack one on Drum Masters 2 Multitrack - also coming out. Not recorded by Ken but it IS a 60's Downbeat Black Oyster Pearl kit.

i think that will have to be a "down the road" purchase; got another kid coming in a few months and I need to slow down on my music purchases. looks great though. anything in this group buy set-up that would work? or any tips on how to get a sound like you threw a towel over the heads (jason faulkner was the one who showed me that trick BTW).Squids wrote:For that you'd really want this www.epikdrums.com There's a Ringo kit there by one of the people who recorded The Beatles.michael2 wrote:i'm still downloading, and have been sick for the last week; in other words haven't got to play around with the stuff yet. anyone have any ideas on which kits are good for a dead sounding 70's kit, or a ringo vibe?

PM me about the Rhodes. I have one too but it is in bad shape. I could use mine for parts and get yours perhaps.
With regard to the towels over the toms... that is exactly what we did for the Ringo kit sampled with Ken. It couldn't be MORE right on the money for what you're asking.
There are no toms in this GB that were sampled with towels over them. Although I suppose one could simulate it a little bit with EQ and envelope dampening but... not quite the same. I'll do a few close approximations for you in the hybrid kits which I am wrapping up tonight as we speak (I had to have all the final kits in order to be able to do them). So I will scare something up close. But nothing BEATs the real thing and we've sampled it many times.
The funny thing about Ringo is that he is actually the VERY FIRST customer who bought Ocean Way Drums! How cool is that? I am friends with his engineer Bruce Sugar and he called me up the day we just got OWD Gold and I was at Ocean Way on Sunset and Ringo was playing at The House of Blues. Bruce told me Ringo wanted to be the first to get it and wanted me to drive it over there so I did.
Anyway, it's funny you talking about Jason giving you tips. I got mine around that time from Lyle Workman and Kevin Gilbert. Lyle had Josh Freese help him pick out some great kits and one of them was a vintage 60's Ludwig similar to a Ringo set. I sampled that in 1995 and it was released on a library called "Interactive Drum Kits" which ILIO still sells for the Akai and other samplers. So Lyle tipped me off to Keystone badge Ludwigs and Round Badge 60's Grestch drums. In fact he lent me an old Champagne Sparkle set for the longest time and then realized he NEEDED them back. At the time they weren't quite as rare as they are now. I picked up a 60's Silver Sparkle Ludwig set back then for a few hundred bucks and that same set is about 2 grand now. Ironically I don't think I've even sampled that one yet! I have a bunch of cool sets at the studio that still need to be sampled... including a cool Bonham-esque kit with a 28" bass drum. It's a monster.
I do now have that JB Sonor kit at my disposal though. It belongs to a studio in the same building. I love the sound of that kit.
Anyway, I digress... I'm hungry and I may just have to grab something to eat. It's been a long day!

Congratulations. Kids are the best investment. Emotionally, of course. From a financial return on investment perspective, they're usually not the most sound investment.michael2 wrote:i think that will have to be a "down the road" purchase; got another kid coming in a few months and I need to slow down on my music purchases.

Did you get the chance to meet Ringo when you delivered?
If anyone had the door cracked open enough to talk Ringo into becoming another EpiK drummer, it is undoubtably YOU.

No, but I met his wife Barbara Bach! She's STILL beautiful. I used to love the James Bond movie The Spy Who Loved Me. She was in that one.zedd wrote:Wow. Here are three chances I missed meeting Ringo that were pretty close!
1. The one I just described. I suppose I COULD have if I really wanted to hang and go backstage but I couldn't stay for the whole gig. Weird night though. I met Greg Bisonette who is a HUGE HUGE Ringo/Beatles fan (woah). I flirted with Gina Gershon a little in the parking lot waiting for my car. I'm telling you I lead a strange life will unexpected surprises - especially thinking back to isolated moments like these. Especially in LA where weirdness abounds.
2. I was working at "The Farm" which is Genesis' studio in Surrey and Geoff the tech there said he had to go drop something off at Ringo's studio. I didn't know Bruce then or I could have gotten myself an invite. I guess Ringo has a place close by. DarkStar must know. He's from that area. Brian May lives around there too I think and Clapton. That's the place to be I guess!
3. I actually worked on a Ringo Starr album!!!!!! I was programming the keys for my friend Mark Hart. I met Mark when I got hired by T Bone Burnette to do the sounds for a Sam Phillips tour - his then wife. Mark was the keyboardist and we hit it off. Great guy. I told a story about him earlier (he was the one who replaced Roger Hodgson in Supertramp and he recommended me for the Aerosmith gig... that whole story a hundred pages back). He was also made a fouth member of Crowded House who I toured with a bit. Paul was wacky. Shame about him. Anyway, so one day Mark called me up out of nowhere and needed some assistance. He was at Westlake Studios with Mark Hudson and Phil Ramone working on a Ringo Starr album so if I wasn't busy... and back then I wasn't busy. All I did was gigs when they popped up and maybe sold off some gear if I needed to pay rent if things were slow (the gear bank... all musicians know of it). I don't even know which album. Anyway, to make a long story short Ringo never showed up for that either.
So I never met him. I did see Paul once for a few seconds. I had a bizarre night at Julian Lennon's house. I got a grand tour of Abbey Road and EMI archives. Talked to a bunch of people who worked with The Beatles. That's about it! I got to play around and even record with some of the EMI consoles they used. I actually recorded yet ANOTHER Beatlesy Ringo kit in England at Mark Knopfler's studio because he has an original REDD 51 desk that has the 47's as opposed to the V72's. Beatles drum sounds were all quirky and different so it is fun doing different takes of it in different environments with different combinations of gear. They all sound good anyway and I am a vintage sound loving kind of guy.
But, I have some strange encounters. You'd think I was full of it with some of this stuff but it's all true. As wacky and all over the place as it may be. A lot of that is just how LA is though. I once dated the girl from A League of Their Own. The "There's no crying in baseball" girl. I just sat next to her at a sushi bar and had no idea who she was. I don't nearly tell all of the girl encounter stories because I don't want to come off as Mr. Hollywood Star Slut Slick Squids Deluxe. But there's been some funny ones. The Brooke Sheilds/Chastity Bono one though I had to tell though just because it is so very bizarre. But there's other stories with Rosanna Arquette and all sorts of other actors, actresses and musicians... on the surface it is sort of fun and interesting to be around that in LA. On another level it is meaningless. I enjoy the random unexpected aspects of it though. I've collected stories galore. So many that it's obnoxious to tell too many of them. I don't even tell my close friends and family some of these things. They've had enough of me and my wild adventures.

thanks a bunch guys, my daughter has been a great emotional investment so far; although a guy I work with says "watch out: a day will come when she breaks your heart like no other ever has." awesome.Squids wrote:Yes. eDrummist, congrats on the new nephew/niece. my kid loves her aunts and uncles.
Squids: I'll PM you. Funny living in LA, all the names and faces are familiar. I used to be in a band called Old Hickory that was on A&M, after touring and getting burned out on the whole label thing, we broke up to get out of our deal. But apparently as the songwriter I owed some songs to the label. They wouldn't let me record with my buddies, so they made me hire a back up band. Hired Josh Freese and Tommy Stinson (and Jason was kind enough to come down and play keys).
I can only imagine the huge collection of gear you must have amassed over the years. I was watching a video today of Tom Petty at his warehouse. Have to admit, it was a little like gearhead porn.

Hey Michael, it's Squids who gets the congratss for the new neice/nephew. I have a boy and a baby girl (who just turned one). But thanks anyhow! Truth be told, I love having kids. Squids, you're still not too old, you know, for some Squidlets.michael2 wrote:thanks a bunch guys, my daughter has been a great emotional investment so far; although a guy I work with says "watch out: a day will come when she breaks your heart like no other ever has." awesome.Squids wrote:Yes. Some of that gear was mine. I sold Tom Petty a Mellotron that I had that used to belong to U2 or at least it was used on Unforgettable Fire (not sure what song but that's what I was told). It was painted to look like wood. I also sold him my Farfisa Duo Combo Organ. I had more gear than I even sampled back then. Just a Recycler junky and with a little Pawnshopping on the side. Fun thing for a musician in his 20's to do in LA back then.michael2 wrote: I can only imagine the huge collection of gear you must have amassed over the years. But, I never met Tom either. Sold it to his tech. However I DID meet Mike Campbell and came to his house and everything. I sold him my Hurdy Gurdy. So if you ever heard a Hurdy Gurdy on a Tom Pettty and The Heartbreakers album surely it was mine. I love Hurdy Gurdys and I have two of them now. But the one I had then was a little plain so I sold it to him (out of the Recycler... half the gigs I got including the gig with Madonna came from the Recycler... as did meeting Jon Brion.. in fact I owe that mag!
Anyway, so Mike's house in Woodland Hills or somewhere in that area is really amazing. I remember there being a STREAM running through it. A real one. Water coming down the mountain and through the living room. I played him my music at the time. He was a nice guy.
So that's the extent of my Tom Petty stories. Not much but something. The Tom Waits story is better. I haven't told that one since we did the old Mellotron sounds group buy. Squids Tron Collection. Might have to dump off some of these additional tapes I have. I have unreleased stuff I bought from someone who worked at Chamberlin (some guy named Sandy - that story is really bizarre) and I just found them. I don't have time to cut them up and put them on the Mellotron though and I don't have the right head stack to run them. I think I can run them off from the Ampeg 2 track at the studio but it needs a different head stack. I blew it because I could have bought the ACTUAL Ampeg that Chamberlin used from Michael Penn. I made friends with Patrick Warren (who you may know of - one of the only people to play a Chamberlin on MTV besides Jon Brion and Fiona Apple) and we duped off a bunch of tron masters at their studio on this machine he bought from Richard Chamberlin (Harry Chamberlin's son). It was even TUBE. Cool old refrigerator looking thing. Anyway, years later I asked Patrick if he still had it and he said something like that he had thrown it out or something. Junked it. I couldn't believe it. I mean, maybe it didn't work but it was also ART!
Anyway I will figure out a way to get those tapes duped or find an intern at the studio who wants to sit there and make Mellotron tapes all day.
Now, I know I went off on a tangent but if you guys like these kinds of stories you know you can count on me. Some stuff is REAL esoteric but then maybe that's why some of you really like them. Others are like "huh? What's a Chamberlin?".
