thats partly what I was hinting at, by asking where the light was. I understand what you're saying about having the light all in one direction, I do this as well I either set it to a 45 or a 90 depending on how I want the shadows for the design. My thoughts about light in the enviroment have more to do with the strength of a bevel and more importantly the use of the gradation tool and textures. The tendancy is to use to much of the gradation and bevel making the one side to dark and forcing larger shadows. For me its not about getting photorealism but in being mindful of taming the shadowing so that it doesn't get the way by having to be to dark or extended covering text and other such things that you want to remain clear. Its been a hard lesson for me to learn and get a handle on.

But to get that extra touch of photorealism, if that is desired by the designer or dev, then the lights direction is even more important and you need to think like you're working a 3D env, but that is not what I was trying to get at it was much more along the lines of what you're talking about.

Edit:
thinking about it a bit more heres a good example of where thing go wrong when light is not considered properly, the image is something I did a few years ago. Heres the problem with what I did, the strength is far to high, the angle of light is not just on 45degree but confused about where it is in the room. So it look wrong and bad.

Heres a few stomps where I was thinking seriously about the light, the direction and then enviroment, where it is coming from in a real space and how it works on an object, much better then my first image imho.

the first example is more about shadowing but can apply the gradation as well, if it to heavy on one side the angle of light is percieved differently and changes they way all the other elements have to be created.

This is what I made from the ground up, using only PS and a Boss pedal pic for reference. The template I'm working with is large enough for more detailed work if needed.
Please, bear with the lack of fantasy. I used some knob PNGs from this thread, and I finally learnt how to use PS for drawing like in skinman. Then I won't have to use that thing again.

Known issues:
-The middle tone knob's text is a bit unreadable, and the knob itself has the default ring around it.
- KRUSH-PUSH, I know I know, realised that on the finishing touches
- The thingie on the bottom is utterly off-theme. (What is that, a dry/wet knob, or a simple holder? Please answer this)
- And I went a bit crazy with the text destruction
- The pedal switch as an animatable object needs to be done separately, I think I'll have to draw that myself.
- And the jacks are still a bit cartoony

Overall, I'm impressed how it looks, to me it's around a GTR/TH1 gfx level. That's well enough for me.
From now on, it'll take a slightly less time to make usable stomp skins. So I can release my sick creations onto the internet. (Prepare for a final Anarchist and Valkyrie :D)

Nice, but there is one big mistake: the part treated most often and badly (with the feet) is the cleanest, most unused looking.....

Finally got some attention and Hlis gave me some lighting instructions. I think I'll go and try that. For shadowing I looked at GTR's and TH1's huuge animated shadow thing, and that caused some issues with the final stuff.
I won't post more here, maybe I'll have my separate thread when I'll make 10 decent ones. ;)

I'm presuming the circle and triangle are there to show the direction of the light? If so the yellow one looks like it's lit wrong, the base of the unit looks like it's lit from near to the position suggested but the other elements appear to be lit from the top left...

Heh, light's a bitch ain't it!

Lighting is incredibly difficult to get absolutely right and it's a thankless task; you only know you've got it right when nobody notices it... :bang:

Yes, the light is wrong and I meant to point that out. The light for the gui is at 90degrees, 0 in skinman, striaght down and the switch is at 120 or -45 in skinman. The switch existed long before the stompfx and the gui, it was actually designed for something else, the switch should have been replaced I have no idea why I didn't replace it I've alway known it was wrong. Now that I've had and used the FX for so long I dont dare change it :) get used to something after a time even when I know certain things are wrong I just accept it, its all a learn experience.

I changed it above, I was bored, fustrated, and highly annoyed and this is what happens :hihi: . I had a gif export from Knobman for it, but its not very HQ, so I just made stills. I didn't upload the file since its nothing serious. I thought it was funny having an virtual finger move the virtual knob as well, well its a good thing I'm not a comedian.
