Archon, dwsel ... cheers for yet more great and detailed reviews :)

Dwsel, the parts were all created note by note with the mouse in FL piano roll ... no arpeggaitor plugs ... very few fx used :)

Difficult to explain how the bells and the 'guitar' sound were done without referring to the synth .... and because I have the only copy of Rezcho1, this is additionally difficult :) but fear not, All contributors can have a copy when I've done the bare minimum to make it semi-presentable :) When you get your hands on Rezcho1, you will see it has an attack phase sequencer ( acting on Osc pitch and two delay feeds )... which can be used as an arp :)

And here's what I'm gonna do.

We have in the past discussed the possibility of a voters prize, but never reached a conclusion as to how this will be done ... whether one prize set aside for a prize draw? ... ask for a prize donation to suit this purpose? ... OK, we might well discuss further, but for this comp, all who vote and nominate a synth will get a copy of Rezcho1. PM me with an email to collect your prize.

Rezcho1 will be added to the participants prize folder which I have for most comps managed to add a prize to and PM links to participants. This time though, I will not be doing a round of PMs. not everyone claims the prizes, and some folks already have what they want from the collection.
( If you are new to entering the OSC, then you get a good deal in that you will receive a link to the folder, from which you can choose any/all of the prizes in there :) .... about 16 plugs I think?? ... plus Rezcho1 )

So I ask all participants who want Rezcho1 and/or any/all of the participants prizes from previous comps, then PM me :)

I hope to continue with this type of arrangement for future comps ... now that I'm not having to run the comp, I should find the time to re-establish the participants prize, and extend this to voters who nominate a future synth :)

Cheers for the offer Tattie, I was wondering what synth that was. Sounded nice too.

Voter prize is a neat idea, but don't know if it should be taken from the main prize pool as obviously much more work goes into entries than voting?

I agree. As I say, I will try to provide a voters/participants prize for future comps :) .... be good to encourage more voters.

Could we have a list of synths used by each artist?

Post

In this one we all use RXML, in the last one I used mikro prism...

Hi Hemmick Reef, to clarify, this is the voting thread for OSC23 ... a special OSC where we were allowed to use any one synth .... and the first one in which we were allowed to use a commercial synth.

For the record, I used Rezcho1 - which was designed specifically for the comp. if you do a set of votes in accordance with the rules on page 1, and accompany your votes with a featured synth nomination, you can have a copy of Rezcho1 for free :)

OSC24 is open for submissions, and features RMXL by Krakli. You can find all the info you need about the synth and the comp by going to the instruments forum, and you will find the OSC24 sticky at the top. The first post will tell you or link you to all you need to know. :)

Sorry, I made a mistake: I used mikro prism. Rxml is a vst free that all the competitor must use in the NEXT competition. The site where you can DWNLD it is http://krakli.com/krakli-free-synths/
here you'll find other vst freeware from Krali, the author.

Thanks for the information everyone, Hemmick

Yea thx for the list.

I should have made one earlier, but then everyone were supposed to write the name of the synth in the file name and mp3 tag.. :smack:

OK, here's my take on things ... the only regret I have about getting these in uncharacteristically early is that I've only listened 3 times .. although I have give a few an extra 1 or 2 spins for different reasons.

Overall? Wow! One of these days, the way things are going with the standard of OSC, I'm gonna have no choice but to say "perfect" ... and that will render all future comps futile :) ... let me just settle for "up there with the best" ... we can have a laugh some other time and annoy the rest of KVR by doing a best ever OSC poll ... with 'fish' and 'thisOSC' as options of course, but for now ...

Journey - Love the reversy sounds at the start... bonus! ok, now the prevailing winds are interfering with the pipers drones ...and some hard, solid percussion has blown them all away, and we're in business. Nice break with the sea and the bird sounds .. cool! Excellent dynamics and production, and a well varied composition all round - plenty of tricks and turns to hold attention. nice atmosphere and good use of 'natural' sounds ... a very strong track which divides my response between the need to dance, and the need to stop dancing and listen.

Snowglobe Village ... Ah, yeah, get those sleigh bells in early. I dont believe in Santa, but it's still nice to hear him coming :) Lovely cosy melodies and harmonies, and a melody which is familiar though I've never heard it before ... a winning combination. not so sure about the Aaaaah - Mmmmmehhhn at the end, but the xmas vibe is well stitched in and the bells are good. Composition is good, production is excellent, and sounds although I would have liked more variation, are quality.

Another day ... Nothing like a church organ to raise expectations of ... err well .. anything :) the lead sound is nice and edgy, but there is a bit of a timing issue going on with the percussion ... like theres a 6/8 vibe squaring up to a 4/4 or something .... on the other hand, that snarish sound is reminiscent of a chair being smashed against a locker ... and therefore has no business syncing with anything other than it's own aims. Add a muffled conversation between two chair weilding desperados, and I'll happily post it to my chair weilding desperado mates as a tribute to their endeavours! :)
The lead riff is rather cool and very insidious, and other than the sync issue, this is well produced and rather entertaining.

Mental Strength ... Skip the intro ... those drums are Fkn great! Love the grinders .... nice round and regular .. Not sure how many sounds are in here, loads of morphing seems to be going on. Unusual but impressive set of sounds, never having to push each other out of the way ... each reaching out - some to mesmerise while others come to pluck your eyeballs out! Well constructed and produced, and yet beautifully dangerous!

Tibet ... It pains me to have to say honestly, that in terms of composition, mix, variation, production, and quality of sounds, that this track falls short across the board. There's a distinctiveness, and a decent idea in there, but unfortunately, arguably the most interesting sound - and a very interesting sound it is, is overpowered, and the decent idea remains undeveloped. I did enjoy the piece nonetheless, and for the most part because it had me imagining that this would be what all music would be like if we had to build all our instruments with slate and copper wire - dont take that as a criticism, because I did enjoy that image, and at least it conveys that there is a certain cohesiveness to the track.

Sorry ... Nice bells! Impressive development from the opening out with great drum sounds and a natural feel ... then WHAM! Great production, seemingly limitless dynamics, excellent quality sounds - a powerful track! If this track was by anyone else but Yeager I would refrain from nitpicking, but in my endeavour to encourage better from an already proven OSCer/composer, the repetitive circularity of the chords/backing is frustrating. The variation of dynamics, rhythm and sounds is screaming out for a keychange/chord sequence diversion/holiday/minor-to-major/mood swing ...but, a fantastic track .... but which failed only in it's potential to be 'phenomenal'

Marsh wall ... gorgeous natural sounds to open ... the we go 50's sci-fi ... nice composition, with the dirty rhythmic bass negating the need for percs. Cool set of sounds with a good balance of variation and cohesiveness. Nicely mixed and produced. The opening woodwindy sound is quality. Overall, I find this track too short ... but only because there are some very interesting compositional elements which I would have loved to have heard evolve further ... take this to 4 minutes, and it will be greater than twice as good!

Tubercular... Oooh that raspy- ripping bass! I want to jump on it and see how far along the motorway it takes me before my knuckles go numb! .... Coming from someone who's never as much as revved up a motorbike ... :)
Great strong sounds all round, nice chord prog ... enhanced by that cool tremolo.
Production, mix and composition all top gear ( see what I did there :) )
Cool use of filter modulation, and tidy percussion sounds ... yeah, this is bloody good!

menACE .. yup, menacing alright, love the syrupy bass and the general spaced-out-ness. great wee melody ... simple, with a little 'key throw' to create a ambiguity re. the perception as to whether in a minor or major key. Solid percussion sounds with a really healthy pump to them ... great variation in the mix, composition, sounds, spacials ... to sum up - fkn excellent track - got the lot by any criteria I choose to apply.

City lights ... great bells with a blend of natural, melancholic atmosphere and strangeness. I love how the 'bed' of this track feels like it is no more than the heavy residue of what lies on top... works beautifully. A well crafted an unusual track ... very atmospheric. A good range of sounds, and a mix with shitloads of character and detail ... and due to the economy of the composition and the quality of production, none of this gets lost. Excellent track.

Curves ... once again, my first listen to the tracks was done blind ... but you can hide an elephant in a matchbox, it's MrBlitz :)
The lead sound in this track is great ... I cant decide whether it is wood, string, or metal .. and yet it is quite simple. What it does though is not!
OK, the organ is in a classroom, the bass ( with the pitch modulation that no-one in their right mind would use on bass ) is right there, the lead ( clarinet-cum-casio ) is in the games hall along with the bells, and the drums are in the clothes cupboard all recorded by one of those plastic mics we used to expect thown in with our purchase of a mono cassette player.
It is all so wrong, and yet so right .. composition-wise, here's that mix of familiarity and waking up in a strange bed that has been a winning combination forever, and has set a number of artists up for life from one hit followed by a lifetime of obscurity.
As I've said previously, it is always difficult to review MrB's tracks, but that's not the same as having nothing to say about them. Fantastic stuff, typically uncompromising and disturbing in a good way, and yet I again hear improvement as regards composition, production, mix, dynamics, and variation.
No points though, sorry, the competition is just way too strong ... but hey, I want you to keep making this kind of shit for the right reasons, and therefore you are not allowed to have any cool prizes which might distract you from your mission :) :) :)

** And .. before I hit 'submit' and leave you hanging on for my votes, I have a mixture of 'told you so' and 'humble pie' to deal with.
I had doubts about this special comp. I didn't see it as relevant within the culture of OSC to do commercial plugs, and to 'ruffle' the playing field. I was wrong!
I even declared my disinterest and said I would not be entering ... err .. liar?
Also, my doubts about the comp were an unfair judgement on Olikana's commitment to OSC on a sustained basis .... sorry Olikana ... Olikana? Hello ... Olikana? .. anybody there?? ... :hihi: :hihi:
Joking aside, cheers Olikana ... this comp is yours, and the great pleasure I have had listening and participating I owe to you :tu:

Votes coming soon.

@tattiemannie: hi, thanks for the 'kind' words, I'll try to avoid the mistakes you've seen in the track, but to me it's not so bad :) even if it certainly lacks of variety and it's a sort of sketch... next time I'll spend more time on the 'composition'....
