One-Synth-Challenge 23: Any Synth - Voting and Results

Finally got around to the second listen for the vote, which I'm posting first as the votes don't necessarily follow the reviews - I've scored these on a combination of song + bellyness (which is slightly ironic as I submerged mine).
MenACE - 5
City Lights - 4
Tubercular Bells - 3
I'm So Sorry - 2
Village in the Snow Globe - 1
I can't really nominate a synth that's going to work for most people as I'm working on a Mac - although TAL ones are usually good as they're cross-platform.

And now the reviews. I enjoyed playing these - there were none that I had to endure. So if the criticism seems a bit harsh in places, that's more due to lack of smilies.
BJporter - Shubatiedoobop
The intro is too long for the amount that's happening in it. After reading the background to the piece, I wasn't really expecting a 4 on the floor dance track. The breakdowns are quite sudden - so it could probably benefit from a few transition effects. Jarre-ish melody at that point is good then it goes a bit Chicane, so suddenly I realised that Shubatiedoobop must be quite near Ibiza. Bird noises good in the middle. Very good production but I confess I did fast-forward through the last third the first time through.
archon1024 - Village
There are bells - proper bells. Overall, it's a bit syrupy for my tastes - but in the context of the title it makes sense. Slightly reminiscent of the happy bits of Dave Greenslade's Pentateuch.
Lunatic - Another day
Great demon organ sound to kick off with. Sort of wanders between Tangerine Dream and Add N to (X) territory - I kept thinking of Monster Bobby on the first pass through. Halfway through, it feels as though it needs to go somewhere other than where it does go or move to conclusion. Ralletando ending a nice touch.
UiiUiiu & Cubensick - Test
Good drums to start + plus bells. The dubstep bass is also good. With more latitude on plug-ins outside an OSC, it could be very evil. The chirpy melody at 0:58 slightly breaks the mood although the organ coming in towards the end does restore this. Recasting the organ melody using a different, more dissonant scale would probably help. It's a little too happy as it is.
Vanmorrison - Tibet
The melody grabs from the get-go. I'm a sucker for physical modelling. The pads act as good contrast. It's a very sudden ending after it loses its way a bit.
Yeager - Sorry
Can't argue with the number of bells at the beginning and with the overall production. It takes a little too long to get places: felt that the section between 1:30 and 2:15 could have been shrunk: a strong temptation to fast forward past it the first time around (not so strong the second though). The ending grew on me on the second play.
IIRs - Tubercular Bells
This grew on me from the first to the second listen. The moves from section to section seemed a little too forced on the first listen; not so bad on the second, though I'm still not sure there was a strong sense of direction. Nice job getting something bell-like out of a single oscillator synth.
Tattiemanie - Sonic syringe
Shades of Crash Head-era Mark Shreeve in this, except he got in a car accident, was nursed back to health in a locked basement and now is forced to compose for his slightly crazed, obsessive fan. He is now desperate to escape but not so desperate he can't add a minute or two to the tune. I wasn't sure where the bells were, and then they arrived. And it was over.
Bzur - MenACE
The start is, indeed menacing and cranks up some momentum as it winds into action. And there are bells. Really like the melody. Slightly loses its way around 2:00 - there's a slight "where do we go from here?" moment, although it recovers well at 2:35 or so. This was my favourite track of the lot. My one criticism is that, given this is ACE, the bass was quite static in terms of sound - might have benefited from some modulation (although I appreciate it might also just have easily destroyed the mix).
Dwsel - City Lights
Intro has right feel for the title. Bells work better in second half. The false ending, restart works a treat (even better on Soundcloud because you can see it coming, but aren't sure how it will play out). And this was a very simple synth architecture - nice movement in the sounds.
Mrblitz000 - Enthusiasm
More inspired insanity from Mrblitz000. The start was very Severed Heads (although not after that as Ellard never played such complex lead lines) - I did go and dig Clifford Darling out after listening to this. The themes twisting around each other works well, although I'm not sure about the bouncy clown-bass-thing, especially towards the end. It's the one that seems out of place, or maybe that's the point.

I honestly admit not to have left a thought about Mac users not always being able to use the synths for the competition.. Dunno if I thought there was a VST adapter or just plain forgot about the Mac user base..Gamma-UT wrote:I can't really nominate a synth that's going to work for most people as I'm working on a Mac - although TAL ones are usually good as they're cross-platform.
Should try to choose synths that are cross platform, but looking at the database here, not many are..

Not many are. It's not a big deal. I have previously simply run the VSTs under emulation to enter but it's time-consuming especially when it's a plug-in you're never going to touch again.V'ger wrote:I honestly admit not to have left a thought about Mac users not always being able to use the synths for the competition.. It's really only worth considering cross-platform if you notice an uptick in entrants (or more turning up who don't usually) for the cross-platform compos are Mac users. I haven't really been aware of that, so it makes more sense to pick a synth for its qualities and if it runs under OS X, then that's just gravy.

5 pts: Yeager - I'm So Sorry
Yea you better be sorry as I believe there is *god help us* a supersaw sound in there and what sounds like a (yes I'm gonna use the 't' word) trance part as well..
You should really know by now that at KVR we don't take kindly to either, but since the sounds, tune, fitting parts, production and bells are all there and in good order, I'll accept the apology and let it pass for now.
4 pts: Bzur - menACE
Brilliant intro is let down (how often isnt' that the case in music history) by a plainish beat and melody that follows. Although the bells, production, and sounds are good, the parts get slightly repetitive and predictable. Love that Jarre-sque 'bubbly' whatsit sound near the end.
3 pts: IIRs - TubercularBells
An interesting blend of bells and saws with nice twists and fitting parts. Sounds and production are good, the only thing lacking is FX sounds for more ambience and (as is so common with us synth players) more varied drums.
2 pts: uiiuiiu&cubensick - Test of your mental strength
If it hadn't been for the slightly repetitiveness which comes from too few parts overall, this would have scored much higher as the sounds, production and detail are all top as we've come to expect from this duo.
1 pt: Archon1024 - Village in the Snow Globe
I hear bells and winter holidays. It's a romantic and cozy world in the snow globe, well captured. Unfortunately Nicholas is planning his no-good deeds and Rudolf has munched the shrooms again and thinks he can fly which means the story will have a twist, but as we know, this has been edited out of the official version and despite the slightly doomy bell also reflected in the song and I just wish it wasn't so glossy but had some grit..
EDIT: Synth vote: SuperwaveP8

Just in time, my votes are in:
bzur - menACE! - 5p
The kick here gave a good run for my sub.. Love the "talking" fx-sound. That Satriani-like main melody is quite nice, and that square-part in the end is just gold.
Brian Porter - A journey to the isles of shubatiedoobop - 4p
Nice trancy and dynamic composition. The "hi-hats" are a bit harsh, but overall very nice song to listen through.
Yeager - I'm so sorry - 3p
Impressive composition. The song really has strong feel to it. That BIG saw lead in the beginning is perhaps a bit too big for the mix..
Van Morrison - Tibet - 2p
Nice atmosphere here. A little bit of drums would've suited the song well i think..
Tattiemannie - Sonic Syringe - 1p
This one is hectic.. All over the place.. but a very interesting listen. Sometimes sounds like Mike Patton at his craziest moments. Which is a good thing.
Congrats for the good work everyone! (including the ones who didn't get my points)

1. Yeager - I'm So Sorry
Pros
- Great use of powerful synth
- Nice dual solo
- Lots of energy, just epic, I ##$*ing love the 1:30 mark, the intensity is amazing
Cons
- It seemed a bit loud at 1:10 mark
2. Gamma - ut - Marsh Wall
Pros
- At first I didn't like it, but it was amazing after the second listen
- The sounds are sutble, mysterious, and have an arabic twang at times… just nice
Cons
- Some of the sounds seemed to either clip or needed some EQ, hurt the ears a bit
3. IIRs - TubercularBells
Pros
- Love the gated synth… reminds me of 1997
- Awesome gritty wobbly bassline
Cons
4. Van Morrison - Tibet
Pros
- The plucking sound is very nice
- The synth sound is like solar stone - seven cities, or Bedrock - Heaven Scent
- Nice subtle bass
Cons
- Didn't like the structure, and dynamics were not fun
- While the synth is nice, the actual brightnes seems lacking… and the overall production I feel could use a bit more brightness!
5. Tattiemannie - Sonic Syringe
Pros
- Nice cat fight sounds at the beginning… really interesting…
- Good energy
- Lots and lots of fun synths in this orchestration
Cons
- Maybe a bit too intense for me… also the structure was hard to figure out, and left my head a bit hurt.
6. Mrblitz000 - Enthusiasm Curves
Pros
- Good orchestration, melody, sounds
Cons
- Instruments could have reverb to give them life, and sound brighter, and more real. This could liven up the track IMMENSLEY!! Also looking at past OSC's, maybe this could give your tracks more appeal to mainstream?
7. Dwsel - Looking at the bright city lights
a. Pros
- Intro - Really amazing atmosphere… totally cinematic… could be a sci fi movie or a batman style movie.
- The build up was great around 50 seconds
b. Cons
8. Archon1024 - Village in the Snow Globe
a. Pros
- Beautiful orchestration, has a really Christian Christmas feel here!
- Nice buildup of sounds around 1:10 to 1:20, and the melody after 1:20 is great
- The second part has such a great happy vibe! It's awesome
b. Cons
- None?
9. Bjporter - A Journey to the Isles of Shubatiedoobop (RC1)
a. Pros
- Birds are my favorite… nice atmosphere
- I like the rythym guitar a lot, almost sounds like a real strum!
b. Cons
- Could use a bit more synth sounds during the intro, and outro
- The rythym guitar should have been louder, and the main guitar slightly less loud
- Ocean could have used more work, especially during the breakdown, you can hear a clip… was bad automation
10. Lunatic_machinist - another day's another end
a. Pros
Almost seemed to be a melting pot of cultural styles - western cowboy, asian, and scottish!
Love the outro… epic way of lowering the temp… and leading out with the same melody as the intro!
b. Cons
- Could have used a few more sounds and percussion perhaps
- Did not like the way the intro came in… too quick… the arrangement perhaps could be longer with more dynamic transitions
11. Uiiuiiu & cubensick - Test of your mental strength
a. Pros
- Awesome wobbly bass sounds
- Really jazzy, maybe sinister leads are cool
- The synth percs are great
b. Cons
12. Bzur - menACE (Ace)
a. Pros
- Awesome melody, and atmosphere… sublime… happy… mysterious all at the same time… reminds me like a volleyball match of robots
- Really nice cat growl
b. Cons

I prefer a Synth that is cross-platform and doesn't have issues crashing - aka something highly usable... if that's possible. Some Synth-Edit software seems to be very difficult to work with in this case.
