BTW Corin: if you nail the Duduk sound, that would make a lot of people happy!

You know the drill, Corin. If you make an ethnic bank, this is what will happen (AGAIN!):Esgalachoir wrote:I'm looking over the names of the instruments you fellows listed above. An Ethnic bank sounds more fun to make by the second. I was going to get some sunlight this year!!!

Please don't forget the Suona in the ethnic bank - Chinese reed instrument, loud, pliable, plaintive, brash, and will definitely cut through any mix!

Saw this link earlier. I've been meaning to get in touch over there.Howard wrote:http://www.vi-control.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=29208

I'll be happy if I can nail it, too!
These emulations are going to take some serious work. I've got my hands full, to say the least.
Thanks for the suggestions, guys. This is saving me some searching and some research.

Also, Evildragon, thanks!
There are some amazing string instrument emulation patches floating around here on KVR. I honestly don't know if I could do any better than them.

Seriously, a suona patch would be a real challenge, since the instrument not only has quite a range of timbres but also lends itself to all kinds of bends and slurs.
A suona as a solo instrument in a blues and/or hard rock context would be something!
I even toyed with the idea of trying to learn to play a real suona, but my Chinese wife made it clear that suona practice at home would be considered a cause for divorce.
I think I could get away with maltreating a Zebra patch while wearing headphones, though.
/Joachim
PS I have plenty of suona recordings available, should you need references.
If it were easy, anybody could do it!

Ya, the thing sounds like it's got an incredible amount of presence.Spitfire31 wrote:Esgalachoir wrote:Spitfire31 wrote:Please don't forget the Suona in the ethnic bank - Chinese reed instrument, loud, pliable, plaintive, brash, and will definitely cut through any mix!

The funniest part of that video is the microphone placed just in front of the beautiful suona player. As if a suona would need a mic to cut through…

When I pulled the video up, what I heard was pretty much the LAST thing I was expecting.
I've got a few ideas on how to conquer the wide timbre range. Also, what kind of recordings do you have?

I have a minor CD collection of the suona as solo instrument in various Chinese traditional contexts. When I get back home in early March, I could make mp3:s of a number of diverse selections if you're interested.Esgalachoir wrote: I've got a few ideas on how to conquer the wide timbre range. Since I'm headed for Shanghai in two weeks' time, I could look for some more source material.
(In fact, I once did nag Rob Papen to make something 'suonish' for Albino, but it never took off.)

Don't know what's more scary in that video, the suona or the "singing" LOL
But I look forward to an ethnic bank! Duduk would be very high on my list as well.
Cheers,
Tom

Hahaha! Actually her innocent plastic grin and her guinea pig sounds impressed me more than that whatchmacallit wind instrument playing.Esgalachoir wrote:Watching this:

I've worked at a Chinese (well Taiwanese owned) music store in Calif... they sold classical, band and Chinese classical instruments... as well as ASTOUNDINGLY bad chinese copies of western guitars violins and noise makers. So bad the Chinese instructors wouldn't even touch 'em... they sold 'em on the internet.
This snapped me back to having nearly-whole Chinese ORCHESTRAS playing in the rear of the store and Gu-jeng, Pipa, and various other instrumentalists of all kinds... erm, as long as they were Chinese.
There is nothing so PIERCING as to have ones sense of hearing challenged with a poorly played Chinese REED instrument... this girl is good...
... but I'm going into the fetal position from just hearing the sounds again.
You're taking me to THE BAD PLACE

I didn't watch the first minute of the video, I was listening to it while browsing another website. Imagine my surprise when I actually started watching the video, and realized that about a 3rd of what I was hearing was HER RAW VOICE...ThomasHelzle wrote:Don't know what's more scary in that video, the suona or the "singing" LOL

When I've got something I'm happy with, I'll most likely be running it by everyone with a demo or something.
I've got a strong feeling that this Ethnic bank is going to take a good deal more focus than the 1st bank.

Sorry...
Of course!!!
I've been wanting one for a couple years now. Maybe it's time for me to splurge? Plans for the Summer: Lakeside, tanning, sipping a cold drink, designing digital duduks...
Oh no!! As morbid as it sounds, I'd kind of like to hear what you're talking about...TomwTwohy wrote:... but I'm going into the fetal position from just hearing the sounds again.

Some of the YT comments claim she is using a small piece of metal in her mouth to create that effect. Either way it's impressive.Esgalachoir wrote:realized that about a 3rd of what I was hearing was HER RAW VOICE...
