For definitions of 'screw around' which include 'being able to find exactly the system and components you want instead of being locked down to about ten basic choices', 'not finding your equipment deprecated within 3 years' and 'leaving you able to work the way you want, not the way makes Apple the most money'

Want a 11" laptop with a touchscreen? Sorry, Apple dont do that. And if they did you certainly wouldnt be able to get one for £400. Want a 17" laptop? Or larger? Tough. What about a tablet/laptop hybrid. Bzzzt. A server with enough storage bays to run a small business off? Nah. Something with dual Xeons, 128Gb of RAM and some Tesla cards, to run your department's physics research? No way.

Buying a PC has nothing to do with being 'short of cash'. Its about having a choice in spending as little cash or as much as one has, and getting exactly what one needs. Apple dont let you do that, unless your needs happen to coincide what they'll sell you.
And the notion that 80-odd million people a year buy PCs and then have to spend 'a lot of time to screw around' to be able to use them is just laughable.

I've got an aging G5 8 core machine. It's still quite nimble and I run all sorts of graphics and audio programs on it. Maybe not the lastest versions, but it's a very useful box.
And my original eee is still a very useful box for what it currently does.
I've also got an i7 Dell running Windows 8 and it took me months to realize that the blue screens I was getting were because of the way it hated when I connected two MOTU 828s to it at the same time.
That's not anything you can blame on Windows, that's an artefact of MOTU's drivers not being up to the job.

:tu:

This is exactly how I view the difference between a PC and a Mac..

It's like ordering a hamburger...

Apple says "Here's your burger - take it or leave it...."

But with a PC I say...Now what do I want on MY burger ?

Hold the onions there Pedro and give me a little more ketchup

You also pay a gazillion $$$ more for the coolness of the Apple product, when essentially it is made up of exactly the same parts but with a different OS...

It's sure packaged real nice though...

Win 7 Pro x64 is a great OS and many of my friends who use Macs have commented on just how smoothly it runs...

Maybe they'll wake up,see the light and make the change ?
No auto tune...

Wow, the tread title sure delivers.

I didn't feel the urge to read through all of it, but I do hope that someone somewhere thought about answering the OP's question? ;)

My preference from a workflow perspective is to use a Mac, but I think with the advent of Windows 7 most of the usability and performance arguments against Windows ceased to exist.

IMO the Mac OS *was* superior to Windows prior to Windows 7, but they are now pretty much on a par. I'd still prefer a Mac, but I am certainly much happier with the Windows experience now than I ever was. Will be getting a new Windows laptop next month and I'll set it up with whatever Windows it comes with (Windows 8 I guess) and dual boot with Linux.

Happy with Windows for my music and recording needs, but hate to install a whole bunch of other stuff - that's there the Linux will come in and that will be my utility OS.

Stupid debate. Each one has its strengths and each its weaknesses.. If you are a Mac user and cannot see the benefits of PC or are a PC user and cannot see the benefits of a Mac, then you live in a nice little closed box of your own ignorance, stubbornness, fanboyism, or whatever you want to call it.

I like PC, I like Mac, I like Linux and each excels at something.

It's called a fair comparison.

Yeah, bring it on.... :P
