I have a feeling it's kinda sorta.
But then since Steinberg has abandoned vst2 what choice do any of them have but to include vst3 support?
Still, kinda sorta doesn't do it, at least for me. Note expression is really the only reason I have interest in vst3.

Aha.....But I thought when Steinberg first announced vst3 SDK they had included note expression in it? No?standalone wrote:Note expression is a Vst 3.5 feature.
Well that is the pits then. I'm sure it will be quite a while before devs support that what with as long as it has taken most to adopt vst3.
Damn the bad luck!

Any choice, because that's not what happened.dsan@mail.com wrote:But then since Steinberg has abandoned vst2 what choice do any of them have but to include vst3 support?
"Steinberg announces that it will no longer continue to develop and maintain the VST 2 software interface but focus efforts entirely on the Software Development Kit, or SDK, development of VST 3.
Steinberg's host applications, such as Cubase, Nuendo and WaveLab, will continue to support VST 2, but the SDK for VST 2 will be made unavailable by the end of this year.
The VST 3 development kit not only generates VST 3 plug-ins, but also is capable of rendering to VST 2 and AU formats."

VST 3.5 = Cubase 6, with note expression

You sort of made my point. I realize if a dev still has the vst2 dsk he could obviously still use it, unsupported as it were.
But then why would he given a new standard and tools when the new tool is backward compatible?
Perhaps I could have phrased it differently.

Yes, that's where I got confused. I have Cubase 6 and did not realize it is now vst 3.5standalone wrote:VST3 = Cubase 4, no note expressiondsan@mail.com wrote:Aha.....But I thought when Steinberg first announced vst3 SDK they had included note expression in it? So Sonar's support of vst3 is just support of what is now old technology. Doesn't hold the interest to me now unfortunately. I got all excited for nothing

If took all 3rd party plugins away the new x3 could be x2b
134€ upgrade price sounds too much for me. Even 99€ would be too much so maybe I should forget the new one and wait X4

If you don't want all those 3rd-party plugins, you could just upgrade to X3 Studio for $99 (~70€ I believe). Same core functionality as X3 Producer, but with fewer plugins. I almost considered doing that because I don't really need all those bundled plugins, but $50 extra for Addictive Drums and a few others was definitely worth it IMO.hansba wrote:If took all 3rd party plugins away the new x3 could be x2b134€ upgrade price sounds too much for me. Just watched the Skylight and Comping videos. The Skylight enhancements shown are nothing to brag about. "Hey, we gave you back the color coding we took away in X1." And less jerky vertical scrolling? Thanks! Why was it jerky in the first place? And the plugin categorization enhancements are hardly categorization at all. You're just telling me which are VST3 plugins versus VST2 or DX (time to drop support for DX plugins?).
But what really got me was the comping enhancements. They "enhanced" comping in X2 by making it suck more, took all the user feedback they got, and instead of fixing the universally decried comping in X2, they waited for the next major release so users have to upgrade to get usable comping. If that's not an F you to the customer I don't know what is.

Studio usually leaves out a few features that are in Producer. If they're otherwise the same in X3, then that's something new.cryophonik wrote:If you don't want all those 3rd-party plugins, you could just upgrade to X3 Studio for $99 (~70€ I believe). One last point for now: what does it say about your DAW when the people publicly lambasting it are all current or former customers? Usually, there's a "my DAW is better than yours" mentality, but there are a lot of current and former Sonar users out there saying "I wish my DAW (Sonar) was as stable as yours" in these kinds of threads.

I, for one, am happy that X3 is now available... SONAR isn't the best DAW in the world (I don't know which one is) but I use it, gladly pay for this upgrade and am real happy with the enhancements since X1...
SONAR has implemented multi touch in X2a, integrated into the DAW code and with a multi touch monitor(s), you get a RAVEN built in (which is cool by the way).
I have downloaded the upgrade and about to install it to start playing around. They said they fixed hundreds of little issues and added a ton of small enhancements, so this should be interesting.

Yes, it leaves out a few features and plugins. The core functionality (including Melodyne ARA, VST3, comping, etc.) are the same. - Addictive Drums
- Lounge Lizard
- AAS Strum
- Tone2 BiFilter2
- Pro Channel Tape Emulator
- Quad Curve EQ Zoom
If you have a nice suite of third-party plugins, then these are probably just fluff, but it's a nice addition for $50 for those who want them.
edit: actually, there are a few additional minor differences (e.g., Rapture LE vs. full, fewer PC modules in Studio, etc.). Comparison chart:
